5 on Friday + Last weekend

1. Last weekend, we went to visit Scott's family.

This was the prettiest trail I'd been on in two years. I always say, about everything, "I want to go back in the fall" but hopefully we really will get back in the fall. I also have this pipe dream of going to Gettysburg in the fall (which isn't too far from there) but I've been thinking that since 2008, so...

He did like the swings.

We stopped to see my friend and Wells met her baby. I don't think he really noticed her much, and I will say that *he's* the only one who did any crying during that visit, so there's that. 

He was nice to her though. 

2.  This week, we had our next-to-last swimming lesson, PTL. The lunchtime traffic-filled drive is not pleasant. I'm looking for a fall activity now. I think I'm going to start trying storytime at the library because it's 20 minutes long for < 2 years and is very close. I also was going to look into The Little Gym. 

3.  Last week, I was able to write 3 multi-page PDFs, do all the editing and proofreading and images, and put them into my Teachers Pay Teachers store. This week, I couldn't even get a blog post together. I meant to do some posts Wednesday night and then I started watching Sticks and Stones, the Chappelle special. If you're offended by anything, probably don't watch because you'll just get mad at the world. I used to watch The Chappelle Show on and off in college and he seems to have not changed his comedy and I think we need more of that in this world. When people started talking about it on Twitter, I knew I had to check it out.

Edited to add: This special on Netflix is wildly inappropriate. I won't encourage you to watch based on entertainment value alone. However, when left-wing media outlets started saying it wasn't funny and not to bother watching it...that usually means it actually is funny, so you should watch to see a view from a greater lens to get a look at our culture. Matt Walsh broke it down really well on his podcast yesterday. 


4.  Scott had to leave on short notice the other day, so this week has absolutely thrown me off. I was going to try storytime yesterday, for example, but after a very busy Tuesday and Wednesday, I knew I just had to let Wells set himself back on a schedule. I couldn't rush our morning walk and his morning nap, so getting to story time at 11am wasn't going to happen and that's fine. Waking him up from naps to go places was something I've had to do multiple times in the last week and it never leads to good things.


5. BIP.

I barely watched this week. It was kind of dumb. I thought that Krystal and Chris (oh sorry, Goose) had a verrrrrrry pretty wedding ceremony compared to the paper decorations Carly and Evan ended up with.

Though, all I can see (when they have these wedding specials) is how Ashley I. gloms onto every ounce of Bachelor airtime and hauls Jared along with her. The worst.

Also, apparently Peter will be The Bachelor? I mean, he can't be worse than Colton, who couldn't be worse than Arie. Right?
I liked Mike as a choice, personally, but they pointed out on Another Bachelor Podcast that he often licks his teeth and smiles at the same time and they said that was a dealbreaker and way too weird for them. I almost agree, because try doing that and it is the most unnatural thing you can try to do.

Many people are quite angry about the Peter as Bachelor choice though. I saw the hashtag #notmybachelor, which LOLOLOLOL. You literally make your livelihood  off of tweeting and podcasting and writing about this show. He's definitely your Bachelor, Ashley Spivey. I hope she was kidding, but she also hashtags #notmypresident an awful lot, so she might be serious.

5 on Friday.

Hey, let's actually get this post up on Friday.
I've had a terrible habit of starting and never finishing posts lately, especially at the end of the week.

1.  This week we've been watching The Great British Baking Show. It's been two years since I saw the first few seasons on Netflix. We watched "collection 6" on Netflix, but then went back and watched "collection 5". There was also a blurb on the description saying that new episodes are coming out August 30th on Netflix. Cheers to that. I love this show so much and I love that we can watch it together.

We've also been watching The Boys. It's really messed up. Scott started it on Sunday when a friend was here for the weekend and it was okay but there's just something about it that's so unrealistic and so amusing and so weird at the same time. So I half-watch.

We finished The Enemy Within last week, which I mentioned in a previous post, and it was really well done. It was of great disappointment to learn that there is no second season. Of course. Of all the crappy shows that get a second season (This Is Us and Designated Survivor), I'm pretty annoyed that this did not.

2. I bought a new water bottle. I'd been using my Hydroflask almost exclusively for the last two years but it's just so heavy and I feel like it's really getting beat up and/or beating other things up because it's so heavy. Plus, I lost the straw a year and a half ago and never bothered to replace it. I wanted something lighter and a bit smaller.
This one from Target seems to fit that description.
(This is the most exciting thing I've done this week, btw.)

3. Oh, maybe not. I put this together in my extra shadowbox frame this week. His onesie and the hat and mitts he wore in the hospital and home from the hospital.

4. In case you missed it...

I posted about my Teachers Pay Teachers store on Wednesday. This is something I'm realllllllly attempting to dedicate time to each day and it definitely doesn't always happen. A little is better than nothing, though.

5. BIP.

*There might be some spoilers below. I don't consider BIP spoilers "spoilers" because there's different outcomes and multiple storylines, not just one big spoiler.*

The Demi drama is just drama. She's a scam artist. Go read Reality Steve. I spent a naptime deep-diving into all the BIP spoilers last week (the best possible use of 90 minutes, no doubt) and she's doing all of this on purpose. If she wanted to get back together with someone she had a previous relationship with and if BIP wanted to bring her on the show, they should've gotten together, proven their point that they are all #LGBTQFRIENDLY to one-up other reality shows, and then Demi and Kristian should've left. There was no need to for them to hang out, as they do for the next week or whatever.

I am not a Tanner fan, but I agree that this is a double-standard AND as they so aptly said on Here to Make Friends, they don't care if it's a double-standard. They want a double-standard in this case because "unfair" or something. Yeah, it's realllllll unfair that Demi gets to make a boatload of money and Derek is treated to the bad end of the double-standard (no one cared about him or even checked on him because they were too busy cheering Demi on...not usually the way heartbreak works on Paradise). Way to show your cards, Here to Make Friends.

Nicole is the worst. She wanted two guys to physically fight over her. So that kind of happened and then she was all "well, I didn't want that". Plus, no one should be allowed to serenade anyone else, ever. I couldn't even watch.

Those are really my only thoughts this week. Also, I found myself LOLing at I Hate Green Beans' podcast because when they talk about soccer star Christian, they play Ricky Martin music.

We have two busy weekends ahead and I feel like I'm in a run out the clock situation until fall.

5 on Saturday.

1. It's been a week. Monday was not our day. To start, I spilled water on my keyboard. I flipped it upside and everything seems to be still working normally, but I majorly anticipated a trip to the Apple store. I have a protection plan but figure it'd at least cost us $200 because just because you have a plan doesn't mean it's free. Again, it *seems* to be working normally so fingers crossed that I just got lucky.

Then Scott spilled gasoline all over himself because a gas pump malfunctioned and I had to take him new clothes, 30 minutes there and 45 minutes back, with a hungry baby who had to be woken up from his nap and ate lunch a little late because of the drive (again, this is like 14 miles, but #Pittsburgh).

Unrelated: We got these orchids for $3 each. You water them once a week with 3 ice cubes each. 

2. Wells was sick on Thursday and had a low fever all day Friday that was around 99. He was just quieter and sleepier than usual and I fed him a lot of crackers and tried to get him to drink Pedialyte because milk doesn't seem like the best thing to drink with a fever. However, he seems better today. I'll have to do a sleep update on Instagram but, basically, he's slept through the night for the last week and this morning, because he was a little congested, I caved when he cried at 6am and I rocked him back to sleep (he slept til 7:30 then in his crib). A baby he played with the other day had HFM a two weeks ago and the mom swore she wasn't contagious (this mom is vigilant too, I've noticed) so I'm watching for a rash but haven't seen one.

Anyway, I'm the awful one who still took him to swimming lessons to get out of the house because he wasn't actively sick and just seemed tired.

Messy, wet hair. I've been meaning to highlight for weeks now. I have the kit. I just need a 90 minute window of "free" time. 

3.    It's halfway through August and I haven't glanced back at my August goals (and I'm not going to) for fear of impending failure. However, I had some time the other day, so I pulled out the baby calendar and started putting in pictures and adding some finishing touches. Moreso just to get the pile of artifacts for "baby book" off of my desk.

4. In case you missed it, I shared books last Tuesday and I'm highlighting this because I made a particularly crazy effort to work through my library holds list in July... and guess how much I've read since last weekend?

Zero. I don't actually if I'll finish this book that is due tomorrow. I'll probably at least try because it's not terrible.

Also, a craft.

5. BIP.

I thought Dean came back as a great example of "least desirable person ever" because he lives in a van and bathes in lakes and now he looks like his dad.

Obviously Caelynn was excited to see him.

She's the worst. That's what I learned this week. Also, Hannah G. is likely the most passive and sneaky out of all of the cast.

That's all off the top of my head...actually, let me look for my notes because, sadly (so, so sadly), I did jot a few things down...

5 on Friday.

I *meant* to have a craft post for you all yesterday because I did something crafty over the weekend but I didn't get around to taking pictures, so here we are: 5 things from this week.

1. Mostly, I've been so overtaken with sleep training the baby that I can't focus on anything else. It's been a process and I know it's going to take more time than just this week. I've been posting updates on IG stories, mainly for my own reference so I have it archived.

I think I changed his diaper at this point, hoping he'd just go back to sleep and I believe he did but only for an hour. I ended up rocking him for a bit. I know that sounds like I'm backsliding but his true comfort is a bottle and I know his teeth were bothering him, so rocking and patting was my compromise. 

Anything to avoid a bottle between 7pm and 7am!

2.  I made granola twice this week and a taco casserole that I thought was really tasty. I put queso on mine and ate nachos for dinner two nights in a row. I also used a brown rice/lentil mix that I had, so they were extra healthy. Also, I put corn tortillas on top instead of crushed chips just because I had them.

3.

Speaking of food, I admit I have a lot of fun coming up with Wells' meals. I might do a post on this. 

4.  I was stuck at a standstill (like, some cars in park) yesterday so I snapped a picture.

This is Pittsburgh traffic. It's a clusterf*%$ free-for-all. There are no rules. If you just glanced at this from above, you'd probably assume it was that scene in TheWalking Dead where everyone was trying to get out of Atlanta.

In this particular spot, 3 lanes plus one merging lane are required to move into 1-2 lanes and there's a stoplight about 1/4 a mile ahead where two more lanes merge in from the left.

I don't recommend this place.

5. As for BIP...I have a lot more respect for Blake now that I know his IG handle is @balockaye.h . A sense of humor is totally appreciated. Also, we have a friend named Blake and that's what we call him. (True story: I had a student named Aaron one year and another kid called him A-A-ron and it led to a playground fight.)

And maybe Caelynn is a villain here? Did you read the texts? Or at least, as guilty as Blake? I've been deep-diving into Reality Steve's last few weeks of posts and it seems like this is an actual misunderstanding of language and intentions.  As well as, this is the prime example of why hook-up culture is so bad and awful for everyone involved.

As in, this all could have been avoided.

Also, Kristina: I used to really like her. It's unfortunate that she's become such a sell-out. I loved it when Cam asked her when she was from and she said Kentucky and he asked if she lived there now and she said she lives in Los Angeles and he said Of course you do. LOLOLOL

I like Cam.

Also, if my kid is going to share a name with anyone from this franchise, I'm glad it's the voice of reason:

Stuff and Things 9/13 +BIP Thoughts.

+God bless this man and this video. The instructions Fisher-Price managed to put together for their auto rock and play (no doubt written by someone who doesn't speak English) are not quite user-friendly. I think they were originally written in Chinese (where the product most likely comes from), were translated to Spanish, and then were translated to English.

+I mentioned last week that I joined a gym here. Since my window of when I can go to the gym is dependent on Scott's class schedule, that leaves me with usually the 6am class as my option. So I do voluntarily get up to go to the gym at 6am but, guys, this is a Pilates class that I can attend 2-3 days a week. With a real Pilates instructor. And with reformers. Do you know how much those classes at a studio would cost? At least $20 a piece. Here, they're included in my $40/month membership. I need to eventually start doing some more intensive cardio, just because it makes a person feel good and all, but that's not this week. I also would really like to do the barre classes (that are also included), but Scott has class during those time slots. This is a whole new learning experience, trying to arrange for someone to be with the baby and fit schedules together. (Again, this is why, in a place where we don't know anyone or have childcare options, I'm not working.)

+Speaking of getting up early, I will also get up unreasonably early to make sure the dogs get a good hike in before it gets too warm.

+Yesterday was vaccination day.

Pissed. 

I'd been looking forward to Wells getting his vaccinations since I was pregnant. In particular, I remember one of my students (almost gleefully) telling me how his brother had scarlet fever and at the time I was 20 weeks pregnant. My thought was Okay, your desk is now moving to the back of the room and Can they vaccinate in-utero? While there's not a vaccination for scarlet fever, the point is that I've hated the idea of him being unprotected against communicable diseases. Obviously I don't like watching him get shots and I hate knowing that he feels bad afterward, but it's for a good cause (coming from me, who has given herself many, many shots...shots are always for a good cause).

I'm just so ready for this to be over with, so here's a few thoughts. I did watch, but I haven't listened to/read up on public opinion very much this week. 

+The Jordan/Jenna thing. But if you listened to Here to Make Friends last week, Nick called it. Also, Jordan has such a squad of fans now. Jenna is the 100% villain.

+I think Annaliese bothered me more in Monday night's episode than she has up to that point. Just stop talking about getting engaged. Kamil has dead eyes and wants nothing to do with her, until he's sitting next to her and then he'll say something nice (but his eyes are still dead) and she'll take that as the Word of the Lord and then tell the camera she's ready for marriage and babies with Kamil. It's ridiculous.

In her defense, he was a tool and she handled it well. Obviously she came out of this with the support of Bachelor nation and he will be ex-communicated (did anyone there ever like him in the first place???).

+Also, Krystal and Chris seem so ridiculously happy together that I can't help but root for them.

BIP Thoughts.

Favorite moment of last week:

1. Astrid and Kevin make my heart soar.

2. Eric got his comeuppance and I appreciate that. I'm glad Cassandra was so smart. I could see the wheels turning in his head. Like a 4th grader who is lying and desperately trying not to get caught.

3. OMGee Annaliese. Please stop. I can't watch you do this to yourself.

4. Ugh to Ashley I. I totally meant what I said last week about her voice and the words it makes. Gag to these two.

And I don't understand why she's so dressed up for beach with the dress and spike heels.

5. Also, JADEANDTANNERJADEANDTANNER (if you listen to Rose Pricks, I hear Ronnie Karam's voice in my head whenever I type that). WHY are they still around? Carly and Evan just seem nice and normal and funny.

At least they were dressed properly for Paradise. 

6. Colton is the new Bachelor and I'm okay with this. I'd rather him than Jason or Blake. And at least they didn't pull a 39 year old from the archives this time. There's clearly nothing wrong with being in your 30s (hello), but that method hasn't really worked for the last two years. All the contestants are always 22 anyway, so might as well have a 26 year old Bachelor.

The finale is tonight (thank goodness). Is After Paradise tonight or tomorrow? I don't even know. I just look to see what's new on Hulu every Tuesday. 

BIP Thoughts.

I am behind, I know. Wells and I (the baby, not the bartender) caught up a little last week during feedings at 3am. The light from the TV provides just enough for me to see him and not trip over things, without being bright enough to actually wake him up. This doesn't mean he goes back to sleep efficiently, but it doesn't completely wake him up either.

Anyway, I meant to get this up on Friday but I wasn't even done with all FOUR hours of it until Friday night so here we are. Apparently tonight's episode is 3 hours? I think it's the JADEandTANNERCARLYandEVAN episode with the babies. I could do without all that nonsense. But, then again, it's all nonsense, right?

1. I really like Astrid. She was on Reality Steve's podcast months and months ago and she has a really interesting backstory...she grew up in Germany, her mom married a doctor from Florida, she moved here when she was a teenager, etc. She went into the challenges she's faced and all that. I truly think she's an interesting person.

2. I don't know what the deal is with Annaliese. I want to like her, but she's trying too hard? She's 33 and just because a guy is available, doesn't mean he's the guy for you...Jordan, Kenny, Kamil...

Apparently the only big thing that happens on the After Paradise special is something with Annaliese. I loosely skimmed some spoilers.

3. Reality Steve also has a spoiler about who the next Bachelor will likely be. Visit the site and last Thursday's post if you dare. Apparently, it's supposed to be announced this week?

4. I've always been iffy about Kevin because he was with Ashley and she is, without a doubt, my least favorite of this franchise. I cannot stand the sound of her voice or the words it makes. Ugh.
However, Kevin is one that I've enjoyed watching be normal on Paradise.

5. I was never a huge Eric fan. He did so much yelling at people during the first half of Rachel's season (I particularly HATE when people say Why is my name in your mouth?). I don't know if he had a good thing going with Angela or not...I had to look up Angela since she was from Nick's season and she's a "model". I thought she'd have been more of a catch.



Really? You love sweets. So does everyone.

We can all say what we want about Tia, but at least she has a very respectable job, you know? (physical therapist)

Anyway.

Thoughts?

I watch on Hulu these days so I likely won't be caught up again until Friday ha ha ha. 

It's been a long weekend (literally) of solo-babying in these parts, so hopefully tomorrow arrives quickly. 

5 Friday Things (from last weekend) + BIP

Last Thursday, I drove to Colorado and knew I'd be without internet and didn't know when I'd be back in Wyoming. So I had a few posts scheduled for this week. Scott and I ended up driving back together on Sunday night. It was my 3rd long car ride with a baby and Scott's first. Wells turns a 3.5 hour drive into a 5-6 hour drive pretty easily. Usually, I've discovered, he needs to be fed twice and changed once. 

1. 

The dogs were very patient. 

Scott bribed them with treats from a gas station.

2. 

We went out on Saturday night, to one of our favorite pho places in Colorado Springs. It's in a not-great part of town, so Wells got to see his first drug deal and we all got to see our first prostitute pick-up.

3.  

The way he acts when I take him into a public restroom cracks me up. He sits in the Ergo, folds his hands, and just looks around with his lips pursed. Also, people are infinitely nicer to you when you're carrying a baby around. They'll even hold doors open for you and smile at you in Denver.

4.

This month's book link-up was not my finest showing, but I did start reading In High Cotton over the weekend. We'll see how long it takes me to finish it. 

5. 

After this week, Colton should be the Bachelor. He is coming off as an absolute Prince Charming and I thought Becca coming back was cruel and unusual in the worst way. I just wanted to give him a hug.

Final Bachelorette Thoughts + Paradise

I knew who the final guy would be because it's almost impossible to not be spoiled when it comes to this show. Granted, I've only watched for about 3 years now, but reading about it can take up an enormous amount of free time. It's just absolute nothingness when it comes down to it and I appreciate that and gladly use my free time to dive into Bachelor canon and build my stash of absolutely worthless knowledge.

I think it makes me more well-rounded, to be honest.

That being said, I have been less than invested in this season. I just didn't care? I like Becca. I didn't really see anything wrong with the selection of guys (some people said they thought she got a bad crop. Sexual assault convictions aside, she did a decent job of weeding them out.) I think I was just preoccupied and busy and stressed out and this seemed trivial.

But in the interest of attempting to be "well-rounded", I'll explain my thoughts on the finale.

1. I thought Garrett sounded so ridiculously sincere when he was talking about Becca after their final date. It wasn't the typical "I love you and the person you are" crap that we've seen from so many who proclaim their love toward the end of the season. He just sounded so real when he was talking about how he loved her midwestern accent.

2. Speaking of, does Blake have a strange accent? I think he does. I hate when these people say "you're my person" and he indeed said that. Did I feel bad for him? ABSOLUTELY. It was very hard to watch. Becca handled it as gracefully as one could...and I was glad she hadn't told him she loved him.

3.  I reallllllllly appreciated that Becca went into this not telling anyone she loved them and that she intentionally planned to tell the one person she said yes to, even if she had those feelings for both of them. It was like she had thought about the consequences of her actions before she made a mistake or something remarkable like that.

4. I thought Becca and Garrett looked so, so happy in the ATFR. It seemed so genuine and real and I *think* they'll be really happy together. It was a complete turnaround from Nick/Vanessa and Jordan/JoJo (even though those two are still together). Rachel was on the Bachelor Party podcast talking about how she wished she'd been given an edit on the finale that was more about the relationship with Bryan than about the breakup with Peter. If they'd edited that last episode differently last year, I bet we'd all felt differently about her and Bryan. I do actually think they'll last and get married and whatever, but she did mention (in another podcast) that he was modeling now and that's just annoying. You're like 38, Bryan. Keep being a chiropractor, please.


5. I thought that the excitement about Paradise was more about how people were over the fact that Becca picked Garrett and they wanted to move on. I wasn't excited about Paradise because the group of people are so fame-hungry that it's embarrassing to watch.

But here's 5 mini-thoughts on what I saw the other day...

a. Colton. Colton. Colton. Colton. Colllllllllllton.

b. I enjoyed Jordan's intro of chopping up the plastic chicken.

c. Bibiana is trying too hard.

d. Tia is clearly the new darling of the franchise.

e. JadeandTannerCarlyandEvanJadeandTannerCarlyandEvan. Let it go, Chris Harrison.

5 Final BIP Things.

I don't actually know what I'm going to talk about on Fridays now that this show is over. I didn't mean to post about it every week lately, because it's kind of embarrassing that I watch and follow so closely. The big question is: what am I going to do with all of my free time?

1. Ben Zorn's relationship with his dog is a lot like my life. I don't understand why everyone thinks it's so weird. I'm not even being sarcastic here.

2. Oh poor Jack Stone.  I can't even with this...he was too good for any of those barely-employed chicks anyway.

3. Anyone who randomly punches Robby is okay in my book. Robby is the worst. Here's the latest from Reality Steve. If you listen to Rose Pricks, Ronnie Karam does the funniest impressions of Robby. Like, laugh til you cry kind of funny.

4. And this is exactly why Peter is the one everyone loves.

5. If you didn't need another reason to dislike Dean, he's a Broncos fan.

Um, and he drinks Bud Light. 

Thoughts on the couples? Derek and Taylor will probably do just fine. Adam will hang onto Raven until she puts her name in to be the Bachelorette next year. And that's all that we've got...Oh, and we can talk about the relationship between Lacey and her quest for validation/self-esteem. But we've probably all been there. Just not with Daniel, so that's a particular kind of low self-esteem problem that she had.

Ohemgee...is this show over yet?

I'm so sick of this show at this point but it's the only extracurricular I have right now. I'm in need of absolute mindless nothingness in my downtime and this fits the description. It's meaningless and mindless and takes up a surprising amount of time in order to properly follow this show (what with the tweet-reading, the podcast-listening, etc.)

The only person worse than Mike Fleiss is Nick Viall. The only person worse than (the newly single) Nick...would be Dean.

Also, everyone in the franchise would fit the description of "younger than Nick".

2.  Effing Dean.

3. Scott was sitting on the couch doing something on a computer while I was watching Monday night's episode. When Ben Z. said he was leaving because he has a dog at home, Scott looked up and got interested. He wanted to know why no one wanted Ben Z. Exactly. 

4. I love this.

5. I think if we need to give Dean any credit at all, it'll be because he didn't mix up any names.

As far as Arie being the next Bachelor, I know nothing about him. I knew he was on Emily's season. I didn't watch back then. When talking to my coworkers, they didn't know who he was at all because they almost literally weren't born back then. I was closer to 30 than 20 in 2012 and they were like 19.
I am glad they went with someone out of the current clique because the folks from the last couple of seasons are really in this for followers and exposure and that's kind of annoying.

They're all a little too thirsty.

Five BIP Things.

1. Jasmine is the worst. She's definitely scary because she's a bully. She totally got what she deserved with Matt leaving but I legitimately think there's more to his story because he was just up and gone with little to no explanation. She got her rose and all, but seriously...

2. How did Adam become so popular? He's so blah. I guess good for Raven. He's an improvement from that Nick bullet that she dodged.

3. Go away, Dean.

4. Tickle Monster and Jack Stone are growing on me. Robby too. He was such a good friend to Kristina. Alexis lost some appeal with the bullying.

5. I like Wells the best (aside from when he teamed up to bully Christen). I feel like they are trying to edit him in a way that could allow him to be the next Bachelor. Apparently, Peter turned it down, initially,  but they'd be really dumb not to keep their options open.

Scott and I had our first date 9 years ago today. We did not meet on Bachelor in Paradise, and seem to be doing just fine.
