Friday recommendations (one movie, lots of music), 4/25

1. The Revenant. We watched this movie from 2015 on Tuesday night. I'd never seen it. I noticed it was in our Disney+ queue because Scott had been watching it at one point. Very much recommend. 

2. The reason we ended up watching The Revenant is because Scott had been trying to get me to watch The Expanse, as he'd basically made his way through all five seasons (on Amazon) either after I went to bed or early in the morning on the weekends. He swore the characters and storylines are ones "you get really attached to". 

No. 

Don't do it. The first episode was good once you wrapped your head around how disturbing and weird 300 years from now could be. But I promise you, you will not care. It is awful. Every evening, Scott was like "ready to watch?" and I was like "ugh". I could think of nothing less fun than watching The Expanse. I don't care what's going on and there's way too much going on. 

3. I fell down a Spotify rabbit hole last night. Do you remember The Spill Canvas? Gold. This video is what you would get if you were trying to recreate 2008 in a lab. Like, future generations could study it if they wanted to write reports about 2008. 

Just kidding. No one writes reports anymore. 

They have ChatGPT do it. 

4. I hate ChatGPT. I hate it when educators use it, especially. Like, no. Do the work. Don't be lazy. 

5. Speaking of a gold mine, do you remember Cartel? Never mind: THIS is 2008 in a bottle. 

And then the actual gold standard of the early 2000s: Taking Back Sunday.

Or, cinematic gold: Brand New. 

6. Honestly, kids today have it too easy: I had all of that ^^^ downloaded *quite* illegally back in college. And if you want to know where all of our Away Message Lyrics™ came from, they were from songs like those. 

7. Okay, well, that was nice, but I spent last night listening to that music while putting reading data into spreadsheets because I'm woefully behind, put together half of a Walmart grocery order, and fed the dogs multiple treats after the kids went to bed. 

I'm officially *officially* old. 

Friday Favorites: Movies

This week got away from me. I blame it on the fact that I had, like, one thing to do Monday morning and that just meant I had to recuperate all of Monday into Tuesday and well..it just kind of went from there. 

I had a conversation with Scott weeks ago about how I don't know what it says about me that my two favorite movies are Taken and Law Abiding Citizen. 

If you know me, you know I'm rarely a movie person. I prefer a long drawn out series I can spend weeks watching on a streaming network. Breaking Bad, Weeds, Friday Night Lights...even rewatching The Office...I need it to be never-ending. 

(I also don't know what it says about me that Wells and I watched El Camino together yesterday...I had the subtitles on and the volume way down soooo..judge not lest ye be judged and all that.)

Here is our winner for most evil TV villain of all time, by the way. 

Taken. Easily the best movie of whatever year it came out. Liam Neeson's best work for sure. This needs to be the plot enacted by parents today more readily. (I think this is how the movie discussion came up...talking about how you'd literally kill to protect your children.)

Law Abiding Citizen. I feel like this didn't get enough notoriety. Maybe it did? I think it was 2009 when it came out, so the internet was as BIG then so maybe I didn't notice. But a friend in Alaska mentioned this once, and then Scott said it was good, and so we watched it together. It's intense. I recommend it, whole-heartedly. It's like Dexter meets ...Taken? Yes, Dexter meets Taken. 

Unfaithful. Diane Lane is a treasure. There is something so sad and haunting about this movie. Was it a book? It should be a book. If you like a domestic literary thriller-type of book, this movie is for you. If you haven't seen this, find it. 

The Other Guys. This is the funniest movie. We watch it regularly, especially if it's been a long or hard week. I also just love Mark Wahlberg. I'll watch anything with him in it. Like Ted. We definitely own the movie Ted. 

National Treasure. I love a good Nicholas Cage adventure movie and this is possibly the best ever. A student told me this year that NT was his favorite movie. And then I had to tell the story about how NT 3 was supposed to come out in 2011 and I will always be sad about that project being canceled. Still, to this day, I am sad about it. 

Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I don't even know what it is about this movie. The cast, the storyline, the self-deprecating comedy, the writing. It's a winner. 

Such a loaded question here, but what's your favorite movie? 

What we've been watching.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile + The Ted Bundy Tapes. I admit I didn't know much about Ted Bundy before watching this movie and this docu-series. I recommend it if you're in the mood for non-fiction.

The Perfect Date. A cute high school rom-com. We spent the whole movie trying to figure out what role the main actress played in Superbad.

Someone Great. This had everything in it that I'm grateful I never went through. Breaking up with someone after 9 years of dating? Ugh. I kept saying to Scott WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM? and You probably shouldn't be surprised if someone dumps you after 9 years of dating...if they're not willing to marry you by then, something isn't right. I know not everyone wants to get married, but then what are you even doing? Grow up. And I kept thinking that if they'd just gotten married after two years of dating, this plot point wouldn't even be an issue; they'd be committed to each other instead of the insane childish wishy-washy-ness. The more minor parts of the storyline contributed to the bigger problems in society (drinking to solve problems, drugs, passing out randomly in parks, random hookups, etc), but the whole crux of the main relationship was an annoyance to me. It was 30 year olds acting like 18 year olds.

The Last Summer. This was actually closer to American Pie than I wanted it to be. I don't know why we watched it, to be honest. It was pretty dumb. What realllllllly jumped out at me was how the 18 year old was like You have a job, you pay your bills, you're on your own to the 22 year old guy. I would think that most 22 year olds fall into that category. Or they used to. This is going to be the demise of our society, I'm certain: childhood extending to the age of 30.

Game of Thrones. We finished the last episode in the hotel room in Chicago. Scott kept falling asleep though so I may or may not have half-watched it three times. I have no thoughts, really. Scott was really disappointed in the ending, but I went through my I'm-over-this phase years ago when I stopped following it.

Chernobyl. One of the most depressing things you'll watch, but very informative and true-to-historical events. In fact, we were really enjoying it until they started killing all the pets (spoiler alert), and then that was it. No more Chernobyl. There were only 6ish(?) episodes anyway.

Dead to Me. Like everyone else in the world, I've also watched it. It's okay. It wasn't mind-blowing but it was fine. I really like Linda Cardellini in just about everything.

The Resident. If you haven't watched this show, it's a great summertime binge-watch. It's the only show I've kept up with week to week. That's saying something. A third season starts in the fall, so that gives you a whole summer to watch the current 46 episodes.

Always Be My Maybe. I think Randall Park is hilarious so I had this on my radar and then I took cold medicine last week and could. not. sleep. (I refuse to take the drowsy/nighttime kind because of the baby). So I asked Scott if I could turn on the TV and he's like fine and right away I was like Yes! A movie I wanted to watch anyway! and he was very surprised that I found something so quickly and then even more surprised when I finished the whole thing at 3am.

Book to Movie: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I think I'll always remember The Perks of Being a Wallflower as being the book I was listening to via Audible when I drove my car into a pond last fall.

However, my coworker had the movie, so she lent it to me and I hooked up the old DVD player so I could watch it while I did laundry.

Here is my original review of the book that I wrote last fall. 

In short, I liked the movie better than I liked the book. I really enjoy seeing how a producer or director can put faces to characters. In this case, it worked. It doesn't always (see: Twilight).

Some things I liked:

+They didn't focus on the journal/diary that much. It started out with letters and ended with letters, but there was no time and date stamp on the movie the way there was in the book. You could tell it took place 20-some years ago, but the setting wasn't over-the-top.
+Charlie in the movie was not how I pictured Charlie in the book. In fact, this whole conversation about the movie/book started when I sent my coworker a gif and she said that was the guy from this movie and it was good.
+I really like Dylan McDermott. He should be in every movie.
+I liked Patrick in the movie better than I liked Patrick in the book.
+I enjoy that it takes place in Pennsylvania.

Some thing I didn't like:

+Sam was kind of annoying. Nothing against Emma Watson.
+About 2/3 of the way through, it kind of lost me. Obviously this is because I knew what was going to happen. But all teen movies tend to end the same way, right?
+Charlie in the movie wasn't like the Charlie I envisioned in the book. That whole autism/ADHD diagnosis I couldn't stop thinking about; I didn't get it from the movie.

It was kind of ironic that The Armchair Librarians talked about books vs. movies this week...I'd already had this sitting by my t.v. ready to go.

The reality of a weekend.

Friday- I went to get a flu shot.  I'd never had one before because I find it to be an unnecessary means of prevention. My parents get flu shots every year and they always get sick for a day or two from the shot.  I never wanted to deal with that.  Scott is required to get one every year.  He never gets sick from it.  A few years ago, I went to the doctor in Missouri for something and she asked me if I wanted a flu shot and I said no and she went about her charting or whatever and absentmindedly asked what I did for a living and I said I worked at _____ Elementary.  She dropped her pen and said, "That's our germiest school. You need a flu shot".  I refused and didn't get the flu anyway.  However, last spring break, I was sick with what had to have been the flu and it was awful.  I felt like I'd gotten hit by a truck.  Therefore, when my district offered free flu shots this year, I went.  My 23 year-old teammate went with me and, surprise surprise, she'd never had one either.

The upshot (ha ha) was that I had the shot at 11:30am and by 3pm I was sick.  Sweaty, kinda dizzy, throat hurt, nose was stuffed up, etc.  By Saturday morning, the feeling was gone and hopefully this means the shot worked and I won't get sick.

Saturday- We spent a lot of time working on the house. Staining the basement floors, cleaning out the shed, cleaning in general.  Then we went to Target and spent way too much money because I'm more likely to impulse-buy when Scott's around.  I got some flannel and a coat because, hey, fall is actually arriving this week.

I can't find the jacket online, but as soon as pick it up from its perch on the chair and wear it, I'll show the world (because $40 Target anoraks are rare).

We had pho.

We saw The Martian.  I hadn't been to the movies in a very long time.  We just don't go anymore.  We went twice a month in Alaska.  We'd drive 5 minutes to the theater to the latest show, I'd wear my sweatpants, we'd have to automatic-start the car from the theater because it was so cold out, etc. Ah, memories.

Anyway, Scott hadn't heard of The Martian and I thought it looked good.  We really enjoyed it.  I will say that it was more horrifying to me than any scary movie.  I hate space.  I hate the idea of ever being an astronaut, being trapped, or floating off into oblivion.  It is more terrifying than just about anything else.  I will say that I more than appreciated how clean and organized NASA is on those spaceships and camps.  The labels!  I loved it.  And those sweatshirts and whatnot they were wearing.  Looked so comfy.  I think the obscene amount of knowledge those astronauts had was mind-blowing.  Also, I appreciated that this movie focused on the science aspect of things and the intelligence of the human beings involved. It wasn't focusing on families or sadness or tears, etc.  None of that real-life Apollo 13 stuff. I recommend the movie over the book because, even though books are better (I didn't read it), I don't enjoy reading extra-long descriptive passages and I have a feeling The Martian would be full of description.  Also, all the trapped in space talk.  I wouldn't be able to read it.

Sunday-We did some work around the house and then went to a football watching party and I had a pumpkin beer. It was okay.

Then my Polish roots started to show as I made potatoes and sausage for dinner.  Trader Joe's Chicken Tomato-Basil sausages, though.  

I did not make it to the grocery store this weekend, so the next few days will be interesting.  Also, I have a 5K on Tuesday (ha ha ha) and parent conferences on Thursday and Friday.  Prayers appreciated (seriously). Also, Scott leaves for training.  Terrific, right?  Sometimes keeping-it-real posts like this are refreshing.

Stuff and Things 2/19

+I had a whole post written, realized I didn't like it, and now I'm starting over.

+The Oscars are on this weekend.  Scott has a bet on American Sniper winning Best Picture and Bradley Cooper winning Best Actor.  I actually didn't see American Sniper, but I have a feeling it will depress me.  Scott really liked it and, in my humble opinion, Bradley Cooper should win Best Actor all the time.  I still rewatch Silver Linings Playbook every once in awhile. 

+This article on Slate ranks all the Oscar nominees.  I haven't seen many of the movies because I'm not a movie person, but I did see The Imitation Game (very good), Big Hero 6 (cute enough), Into the Woods (dumb), and part of How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Scott likes animated movies).  Gone Girl is on my list, but I've seen none of the others.  I feel very out of touch.  

+But I will be watching on Sunday.  Because we have the opportunity of winning $550 and I need to celebrate if that's the case.

+Some days you feel really put together, clothes-wise.  Yesterday one one of those days. To the non-blogger though, I just look like I'm wearing blue stripes with black, and black with brown, and two different stripe patterns.  

I had trouble getting a decent picture.  I'm out of practice.

Why Love Actually is the best movie ever

I remember when it came out in 2003 and my cousin, whose opinion I trust more than anything, told me the story was kind of hard to follow.  So I ended up never going to see it in the theater, even though I initially thought it looked interesting.  In fact, I probably never saw it until 2008ish.  Now, it's my favorite holiday movie.  I am an absolutely sucker for the fact that it takes place in England.  I don't know why this fascinates me.  It's why I love Kinsella's books.  The fact that Liane Moriarity's books take place in Australia is what keeps me reading them.  Maybe I need to travel more.

Last Friday night, I was browsing through Netflix and I came across Love Actually.  While I'm not one for Christmas music in November, the week of Thanksgiving marks the beginning of Christmas movie season in my house.  

When Scott came into the room, he was all, "NO."  He was appalled that I was watching a Christmas movie when it wasn't even Thanksgiving yet.  That's laughable.  Look around blogland, Scott.  We're behind!

We most certainly spent our Friday night watching this movie.

Stuff and Things 6/5

Thank you all for the well wishes on my new job!  I'm pretty thrilled to be able to slide right into a teaching position and, hopefully, feel at home in my new state.

I'm very much looking forward to moving out of my empty, desolate house so I can do something other than sit on the floor and watch Gossip Girl.  Kind of.  I think.  Last weekend consisted of me, seasons 4 and 5, and an economy sized bottle of Yellowtail.  I've never rooted for a couple as much as I have for Blair and Chuck.  Not even Tim Riggins and Lila Garrity.

Dumbest question ever.  I busted through 30+ episodes in 4 days.

Anyway, this week's stuff and things is sparse.  Not just weak like last week, but sparse.

We've driven 12 hours in the last 2 days, visited wonderful friends, and Scout had a joint puppy birthday party.  A good time was had by all.

We saw the movie Neighbors on Monday night.  HILarious.  Go see it.  Rose Byrne was fantastic.

We've had 2 Panera picnics and a Papa John's hotel room delivery so far this week.  Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.  Undoubtedly more Panera.

There's a lot going through my head right now, so I think a lot of it deserves individual posts (like the pup party).  We are thisclose to being out of Missouri.  Soon, friends.

+ Scott and I went shopping the other day.  Actually, we needed to buy dog food because our snobby dog won't eat Purina bought from Wal-mart.  This dog will eat paper, plastic, and dried pig ears, but not dog food from Wal-Mart.  We drove an hour to Pet Co. and Scott said, "We might as well go to the outlets".  I wasn't feeling it, but I found a dress in The Gap for $17 and he took off on his own.  He came back with 4 pairs of pants and 3 button-up shirts.  

Then, Scott proceeded to tell me how much money he saved and I wasn't sure who he was for a minute there.  It was his semi-annual shopping trip.  He only goes twice a year.

+Then we went to HyVee so I could buy quinoa for less than $25 a pound, and I found kombucha.  

It was actually pretty tasty…do you drink them?  Any flavor recommendations?  And have you seen health benefits?  I could buy $4 lattes for the price of a kombucha.  I told Scott a lot of places brew their own, like beer.  Since we're moving west again, we are both looking forward to being in the land of craft beer.  I'm sure Colorado has some restaurants that serve kombucha.  

+We watched the movie Best Man Down on Netflix over the weekend.  I picked it because the newlyweds' names were Scott and Kristin and she was a teacher.  We really enjoyed it.  

+We've determined that our dear Scout is a runt.  More on that tomorrow.

Hunting last Fall: And no, he's not babied (or wrapped up in blankets and sitting on a dog bed in the woods) or anything.  

+The Walking Dead was really good this past week.  I should also throw it out there that my first legal drink was peach schnapps.  Sorry, Daryl.  You weren't around with your moonshine.

It's also worth noting that TWD was the sole inspiration for these "Stuff and Things" posts. 

+Lastly, what in the world does Leo have to do to win an Oscar?  

Weekending

Scott got me a cross for my birthday.  He said he couldn't find what I wanted (rose gold) anywhere, and therefore went to his stand-by of Tiffany's.  I'm not complaining.

It's almost funny that he had gifts sent to me often while he was deployed, and all were dropped off on our front porch in Alaska while I was at work.  Here, he insisted on waiting at home all day for the package, opting to sign for it because that's how we feel about our neighborhood.

My mom sent me a bundt pan (because I mentioned I didn't have one), warm socks (so I don't have to steal Scott's…I wear hers when we go home), and a book.  I wonder how she knew I had this show in my Netflix queue?  Strange, right?

Saturday night, we went to the ghetto movie theater in Waynesville.  It's hard to describe the place, so I won't try.  Maybe next time.  Just picture "awful", "smelly", "crowded", and "no military discount". (If you're keeping track, that's one more point for Alaska and its gorgeous movie theaters.)

We saw Lone Survivor, so that made us forget our surroundings and our first-world problems quite quickly.  Scott had read the book soon after it was written.  I remember him telling me the entire story then, but I've never read it myself.  This article is a great one for summarizing/fact checking.  Obviously, there's spoilers but, as the article says, pretty sure the movie title gives away the ending.

It was a good movie.  You should probably go see it.  I admit that, last year, I liked Zero Dark Thirty better, but the interesting thing was that we watched this in an absolutely packed theater and I'd say 90% of the viewers were soldiers because it was the theater right next to the base.  Everyone was absolutely silent during the movie and most were leaning forward in their seats the whole time.  It was enthralling, for lack of a better word.  There were moments where I had to cover my eyes because some of it was really uncomfortable to watch.

Anyway, go see it.  Lt. Murphy was a PSU graduate.

Remember when we had a cat in residence?  He taught Scout how to be a cat.  This is where the dog now sits.

Uh huh.  I know that's your new favorite spot, Scout.  I'm definitely not happy about it, but whatever.  We'll move soon enough and then you'll be all out of sorts and have to find a new favorite spot. Good luck.

Date Night in State College, PA

In September of 2008, we had our first date at Mad Mex in State College.  It was really good.  We had wings, guacamole, margaritas, etc.

Each time we come home to visit, we usually try to stop there because they do have some of the best margaritas.  Had, anyway.

We went there the other day and the margarita was kind of sour (more than it's supposed to be) and there were fruit flies around.  

The guacamole was bland, the slices of avocado were brownish, cucumbers were old, the steak was undercooked and tasted old too.  That was just my food.  Scott's rice and beans had clearly been under the heat lamp all day.  

Maybe I've just gotten better at Mexican food at home?  Maybe I've set the bar too high?  Maybe…Mad Mex is just really really really bad now.  

Anyway, we won't be going back.  What a waste.

Then we tried to go to Dunkin Donuts.  It was closed at 8pm.  

I said, "Let's go to Target, kill time before the movie, and get Starbucks."  Because every Target in the history of the modern world has a Starbucks and a set-up that is just designed to suck you in and empty your wallet.  Not this one.  It was the old Target set-up (circa 2001) with a snack bar instead of a Starbucks.  For shame, State College, for shame.

Do you remember these old Targets?  I barely do.

We walked next door to the "nice" grocery store because in my (apparently delusional) world nice grocery stores have coffee shops.  It didn't.

We went to Sheetz for our coffee.  It was awful.  First of all, we used the made-to-order "espresso" bar and it took longer than a 7:30am stop at the Starbucks drive-thru.  Scott's cup was half-full and not what he ordered.  My non-fat caramel latte tasted like bitter sugar water.

Onto the movie theater… we went to see American Hustle.  As soon as we sat down in the empty theater, two guys came in and sat right in front of me.  We moved.  The movie theater screen was showing commercials without actually showing them (just sound), so we figured the next logical step would be for the movie to malfunction and we wouldn't get to see it after all.  

It did function, however, and we were treated to American Hustle.  Good movie, but long movie.  I was getting completely irritated by the end because I was so uncomfortable.  Anyway..it was okay.  I didn't love it but I didn't hate it.  I liked Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence together in movie again (she'll get a nomination of some sort, I'm sure), but Amy Adams was kind of annoying.  Silver Linings Playbook was much better when we saw it last year.  

I usually make it a point to see all the Best Picture nominees and I'm sure this will be in the running.

See any good movies lately?  We used to go to the movies once a week in Alaska.  Now the theater in our town is less than desirable…We've only been once and that was to see Catching Fire.  

Winter's Bone

The other day, it was chilly.  40 degrees goes right through you in Missouri.  40 degrees in Alaska was like a day at the ....lake.  

Look at the dead flora in the background.  It's starting to look awfully Winter's-Bone-ish in these parts.  Have you seen Winter's Bone?  You should check it out before you storm the theaters for Catching Fire next week.  Stars JLaw. Takes place in the Ozarks.  

That movie makes Missouri look like the most depressing place in the universe.  

Since I don't expect a snowpack anytime soon, I do expect that you'll be staring at the same dead shrubberies for the next few months.

Lately...

I've watched a few movies.

Not Suitable for Children

I admit that I went for this one because Ryan Kwanten was in it. It was fun to see him acting with his native Australian accent and the movie takes place there.  He does play a rather Jason-Stackhouse-like character.  However, there's not a vampire in sight...
At the beginning, I was all, "Meh". Toward the middle, I was all, "Might as well stick it out". By the end, I was practically crying happy tears.  It has such a sweet, albeit non-traditional, love story component.  Since I'm not a fan of love stories, they usually have to follow a pretty unordinary, discombobulated path for me to like them.  This one delivered.  Scott fell asleep.

The Vicious Kind

If you're an Adam Scott fan, you need to watch this.  I find myself willing to watch any movie he's in because, as this will show you, he's a GOOD actor.  Like, not just a slightly funny one, not just a good-looking one...a GOOD actor.  And yeah, as usual, he plays an absolute jerk.  But you'll maybe like him a little bit by the end.  Maybe.
Brittany Snow as a nearly-gothic brunette will draw you in too.
We really liked it.

I also watched Devil (actually kind of good...I like Chris Messina), Celeste and Jesse Forever (better than I thought it'd be), and The Paperboy (dumbdumbdumb).

I've stopped listening to 2 audiobooks due to boredom.

The Book Thief and The Boleyn Inheritance.  Sorry.  I just couldn't do it. I've had the paperback copy of The Book Thief in my nightstand drawer since May of last year (I snagged it from the book order).  Now I KNOW I'll never read it.  That's a relief..one more thing I can get rid of.

I've taken no outfit pictures.  Oh, wait.  Unless you count this one.  I don't know what Scott doesn't understand about "shoes too, please".

That's a Banana Republic Outlet dress that you'll never, ever see all of I guess.

Oh well.  I figure it'll look good with blazers and boots in the fall too.  I was wearing these Old Navy sandals with it because I love them and I don't know why I ever worried about them being uncomfortable because theyaresodarncomfortable.

I did a treadmill interval run for the first time in a month (maybe more).  I actually had to adjust the times because, in the absence of running, I've gotten faster.  More proof that you can be conditioned without being a real runner!  My cardio classes have been helping me.

I made this Cake Batter Dip for a friend's party.  You should try it.
