Stuff and Things, 10/9

+Last weekend, Sutton went back to Missouri with Scott. That left me with just a 7 year old and I don't care how much hate I get for this: one child is not parenting. One child is like no child if you're doing kid-math because there's no one for them to fight with. One child who is over the age of 5 is like a vacation. I can outline this in more detail if you like, but go ahead and @ me.

However, without Sutton around, Wells talked to me for 48 hours straight. Wells talks about exactly two things: snakes and electric cars.

Anyway. She missed him a lot and he missed her. It was the first time she'd ever been away from me for more than a few hours so that was something. A year ago, I don't know that I could've done it. Maybe next time he'll take Wells plus a dog or two, because Sutton is a lot more fun to shop with than Wells. Wells asks for everything. Sutton is just happy to look.

+I took Wells shopping. I'm slowly starting to put together some fall-winter wardrobe purchases for myself. The only good thing about never-ending summer is that I'm not rushing into winter-weather clothes buying:

I got these at Target. I've been looking for a Chelsea boot that's not too chunky and also waterproof for years now. I don't want to invest a lot of money into them but I've always actually had luck with most Target purchases.

These are $30 on the site but I went to try them on because I know immediately when a shoe isn't going to work. They were only $25 in-store because the price tag still said $24.99, even though the price has been officially raised to $30! The cashier changed it back to $24.99 for me and said the physical stores can't keep up with updating the prices in real time. So...check in-store!

I got an 8 and usually I'm an 8 or 8.5 in shoes.

+Speaking of price changing: I saw a reel about Walmart not leaving price tags on items because they want you to scan them into their app and buy from your phone or whatever. It's also so they can adjust the prices whenever they want. I checked on Saturday and it's true.

I usually make a grocery list within the Walmart app and use it to shop from while in the store. The app never works correctly when connected to 5G. Turns out, this is by design. In the store, they WANT you to connect to the store's wifi and then the app will work correctly. Not in a million years, Walmart.

On the same reel, the man said if you can afford better quality, you shouldn't be shopping at Walmart (or Target) anyway. It's definitely the mentality of fast fashion that is getting us. I have had a tshirt dress or two from Walmart that have been great in the last 6 months and I've had MANY quality pieces from Target over the years, but I get what he's saying.

I also got my Freedom sweatshirt in the mail a whole week early. So, great service from that company!

I got a medium.

Now, this is my inspiration for hoodies and jackets but it's 80 degrees still so we'll see.

Stuff and Things, 8/28

+ I tried: I watched one and a half episodes of the The Summer I Turned Pretty. I'm now sad to report that my IQ lowered by 7 points in those 67 minutes and I will not ever get that time back. (The nickname Belly bothers me more than it should.)

The funny thing is that I had watched the first episode back when it first came out and never went any further, so this doesn't come as a complete shock to me. Everyone is talking about it, so I thought I'd try again. Nope.

+Okay, onto Fashion Files: I'm really trying here guys. I have resigned myself to summer never being over and never getting to wear fall clothes again. Scott took a video of me complaining about summer and he thinks it'll be some "gotcha" come January. No way. I don't love cold wind but you will not catch me complaining about winter weather. Now, it DID cool down this week but I'm mostly in disbelief that the heat and humidity could ever end.

Using "color pop" here because my backgrounds aren't quite pinterest-worthy.

This is a random $10 tee from the PX and Free People pull-on shorts from the beginning of the summer. I got the shorts for $30 at the PX. I probably wouldn't pay the Nordstrom price ^.
It's this bag which I'm still not sure about.
I like how it looks. I like the Stitchfix brand. It's trendy but I don't know that I like the trend, if that makes sense.
Keds from last year. These are similar.

Old Target pull-on shorts, old AE tee from last summer, and this Aerie button-down.
I bought these sandals 2(?) years ago from Madewell and I've loved them ever since. They have seen better days so I went out and got a pair of Tevas this summer to replace them and the Madewell ones are so much better.
But you can't find them anywhere, ever. It was a fluke year or so of them being sold on the website. Sad.

Same 2020 Universal Thread pull-on shorts and then I ordered two different NFL tees from Old Navy. Definitely love them. Wait for the LDW sale that I'm sure is coming!
Adidas (currently all muddy, so cleaning suede will be my weekend project)

+I also have been watching a ton of reels about hair lately. I tried a few things, thinking maybe they'd work for me. For example, I have naturally wavy hair. I thought I could try the curly girl methods and went in with some curl cream on wet hair. It did actually give me good beach hair but definitely no curl. I do like the curl cream a lot more than a pomade or a gel.

When I see tutorials and the person has naturally straight hair or thin hair, my results are never quite the same. It's why I never go down the hair rabbitholes with new styles; they never work the way I see them work on the internet.

The first clothing item I've bought since Labor Day

...and I was trying to figure out why. Like, why haven't I cared to buy clothes? A lot of it was because it's really annoying to buy the fall clothes when it's a million degrees outside.

I had a giftcard for Aerie from a return (what a scam that is!) and I was looking for a sweater. I only actually own a couple of them. While I have a red sweater, this cherry color "spoke" to me because it was darker.

I will say it's definitely more cropped than we see in the picture. I ordered a small since Aerie usually runs big. To be honest, some of my biggest hits come from Aerie.

^^^This says that's an extra small and the model is 5'9". I can't believe that based on length.

I'm thinking I can wear it with black pants (which, I need new ones), my flared leggings (also the best thing I've bought this year), or...jeans. I bought a new pair of jeans back in August and haven't worn them yet. I literally think the last time I wore jeans was last December. (I'm the weirdest person I know, I suppose.)

However, I did find myself on this unintended shopping ban for a few reasons: I'm tired of buying clothes that get 2-3 good wears and then they lose shape or shrink or fall apart. I have two items with holes in them and it's slightly devastating when something you like is no longer wearable.

So I didn't want to spend on fast fashion or at trendy places.

Second, I refuse to buy more dresses for school. I am.planning on probably not teaching after this year. I don't want a closet full of work clothes that I won't wear day-to-day after this school year. I don't want to, essentially spend my salary on clothes I won't wear constantly. I got rid of an entire wardrobe after Wells was born. I built it back up when I went back to work in 2020. I am still wearing some of those items but they're starting to wear out after 4+ years. Also, when I went back to work after having Sutton, all of a sudden certain things didn't fit the way I wanted them to anymore. There's been items in my closet that I wore a few years ago that I haven't worn post-Sutton and I'm still hanging onto them. (Basically I've spend a lot of time listening to closet-curation podcasts lately.)

That being said: I am still dressing like a teacher and not like a high school student. Many people who teach dress like students. It's super disheartening. You will not catch me wearing leggings and a sweatshirt or jeans and a t-shirt to school. Oh my gosh it would be easier and more comfortable! I have a visceral reaction to that though because I've been at this for too long. I can't do it. I've been grandfathered into the old way of thinking about things. I still wear tights and dresses in the winter and dresses and not sneakers (okay, sometimes nice sneakers) in the warm months. (This year, we were able to pay $25 in advance and wear jeans whenever we want.)

Lots of random thoughts there, but I realized a few weeks ago that I basically went into this fall/winter season with no new clothes. I've worn and re-worn and mixed and re-mixed everything in my closet in the last 3 months. It's kind of insane but I've never done this before and I ended up here completely unintentionally!

Questions:

1. Where are you buying pants? I have no idea where to look. I feel like there's very few pants out there that aren't super trendy.

2. Do you remember Kendi's remix posts from many years ago? I miss those days. She was definitely my inspiration when I got dressed in Alaska every day.

(Unedited, dirty mirror from the toddler, dogs in the background, and all)

Sweater and dress: Target 2021, Booties: Target 2019, Bag: Simple Modern recently (this is a much more high end version..the one I got isn't for sale anymore :(

Top: CJLA (Maddox...last fall), Skirt: Grace and Lace (last fall, not on the site), The Best Sandals Ever from Madewell (also not sold anymore :( They're a lot like Tevas though)

Cardigan: Stitchfix 2020, Leggings: Target 2021, Booties: Target 2019, Tshirt: Free People 2024 (similar)

Cardigan: Target 2019, Blouse: Loft 2023, Pants: Old Navy 2023, Booties: Target 2019

Kimono: CJLA basics collection 2023, Tank: Old Navy 2019, Pants: TJ Maxx 2024

Pants: Aerie 2024, Sneakers: Skechers 2024, Tshirt: Stitchfix 2020, Button-down: CJLA 2024 (similar)
**fun fact: I ordered a medium in the pants to start and they just felt too constricting and I wanted something more pant-like so I sized up to a large and they're perfect and didn't even stretch out throughout the day. Then I saw an influencer post them and she also posts her weight and typical sizes. *She* got a medium and says they're perfect. She weighs 30 pounds more than me so I don'tbelieveher. I mean, maybe? But I had trouble with a medium because I didn't want them to be a second skin because I want to be able to wear them to work.

Jacket: Banana Republic via Costco 2023, Dress: JCrew Factory 2024, Sneakers: Skechers 2024

Mia Sandals (similar), Skirt: JCrew Factory 2024, Cardigan: Target 2021, Shirt: random TJ Maxx

Kimono: CJLA 2023, Dress: Target 2022
(omg look at that background)

I've taken these pictures over the last month. I miss my tan already. I cannot believe that it takes me all summer to get that August tan and then it's gone by October 1st.

Anyway, the proof that I put the teeniest amount of effort into clothing if I think I can/should take a picture of it was very evident this week. I didn't take a single picture and I also didn't even try. I think I wore a random dress each day and didn't even dry my hair all the way in the mornings. That's why I have to start making this a regular blog feature again.

The most redneck thing I've done lately

I don't do as many "country" things as I used to...I hate the heat, so I don't go outside much this time of year. Throw in two small kids and it makes the prospect of fishing, hiking, hunting, whatever all the more unappealing....cajoling, packing up all the snacks, mosquito bite, ticks...you get it. Maybe this winter.

The last time I truly enjoyed a walk in the woods was when I was pregnant with Sutton in the fall of 2021 for reference.

MoDot (the esteemed MO department of transportation) was doing that chip and oil tactic to our main road through town last week (doesn't that just scream redneck to begin with? Main road, through town?). It was honestly a 10-12 mile stretch. I'm on about 2-3 miles of it to get home from work. There was a pilot car and everything. One of those situations where you wait. I'm terrible at waiting and I'm really terrible at waiting for anything by 3:30pm with two grumpy kids and 100 degrees staring back at me from the dashboard.

So I was like second in the line of cars waiting for the PiLoT cAr to come back and could barely see the flagger so I didn't even know if we were stopped-stopped or if the truck in front of me was just there for some other reason. There was a giant construction truck, it turns out, blocking the flagger with the stop sign so you couldn't actually see him. It was a functional operation, is what I'm saying here.

Anyway, when I realized it was going to take me 40+ minutes to get home (thanks Google maps!), I thought about alternatives. I remembered there was a dirt road behind my school that loosely connected to the other side of town. I made a u-turn and backtracked. I got on the dirt road, I drove on this dirt road along the railroad tracks, I crossed some side streets until I got to the one I was looking for. I turned left. I drove for 3 miles on a paved, windy country road. I made a sharp right at the cemetery and went up the hill onto the dirt road called "Buttercup".  And I followed that dirt road for about two miles until I had made a complete circle and ended up on the other side of my house. I made it home in 15 minutes instead of 45.

I only know about this network of criss-crossing dirt roads in this town because of our time on our UTV (also known as a side by side). Everyone here licenses their UTV and drives them on the dirt roads and also on the paved roads. Actually that is probably the most redneck thing we've done since moving to Missouri.

Upon arriving home, I dragged all the mail into the house and took a picture in front of a dirty mirror mostly because Scott had told me I looked like a bumblebee before he left in the morning and I wanted to document that:

These kimonos from CJLA are my favorite. I untintentionally wore all three that I own last week. This color is on super sale right now if you also want to look like an insect. (I'm wearing a small for reference, at 5'6".)

Did I tell you I'm not shopping at Target anymore?

I know. Virtue signal, virtue signal, boycott, boycott. It's tiring at this point. That's why I don't think I've brought it up here: there's no point. For me, it was time to just stop shopping at Target.

I'll outline my reasons here but I'm not even looking to try to convince you to do the same. I'm simply making you aware of what has been happening.

It never occurred to me that people just didn't know what was going on. I live for the news cycle. I always have watched the news, listened to the news, read the news daily. It's a habit I picked up very young. I always, for some reason, make the assumption that other people do the same?

A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend who told me she had gotten a bunch of school stuff at Target and I should go too because they were having a huge sale. I had to explain to her that I wasn't buying things there anymore. She was genuinely surprised and curious. I told her my basic convictions over it as succinctly as I could...

"Well, they do pay to cover employees' out of state abortions (instead of paying for maternity leaves because maternity leave does not help their bottom line the way abortion does).

They are selling gay pride and pro-transgender clothing for children. It's not just some pride gear here or there. It's onesies and bibs for babies. GLSEN, the group sponsoring and designing the displays this year, has a particular focus on "trans kids" in schools. It's like professional development for k-12 educators. They recommend books about transitioning to the opposite gender for elementary-aged kids.

In addition to the tuck-friendly suits that may or may not have been sized for children, the backlash that Target faced in the form of violence and threats was actually from the LGBTQ activists over the idea that any displays may be moved or taken down. That link up there also mentions that some of the gear for Target this year was designed by a satanist; even if the particular satanic designs weren't featured for the pride month collection, that was the catalog and backlog of this particular man's work.

Anyway, my friend was horrified when I told her these things. She had no idea. She was just hitting up the Target five minutes from her house for all the things she usually buys. I think we are going on autopilot most days when it comes to shopping and fulfilling needs and wants through consumerism. We just don't realize what's in front of us.

My point here isn't to really convince you of anything but to just tell you. I'm not trying to enforce my agenda or even tell you you're wrong. I just want you to know in case you don't already.

When I've seen influencers and bloggers posting their Target hauls lately, I used to kind of think wow, they don't care. After talking to a few in-real-life friends, I realized they probably just don't know. We're all busy, we're all living life and doing the best we can, and my Target orders used to be fun boxes to get in the mail. Luckily, for me, I live 45 minutes from the nearest store :) Plus, the clothes this summer are not cute. It hasn't been very tempting.

I could link you to some podcast episodes or some other resources if you want to know more but I figured this was worth mentioning (and worth outing myself basically as one of those Target-boycotters) because I want everyone, everywhere, to have all of the information. *insert giant shrug here*

All that to say: This is from last year and the year before. It's a shame because their clothes used to be pretty reliable.

Shorts and shoes are Universal Thread. Pullover is Knox Rose.
Again, *insert giant shrug here*.

Fashion Files.

A few more things to share. I've been going a littttttttle nuts lately. In fact, I'm giving up buying things for Lent :)

First, this awwwwwful jacket from Amazon. I saw it on a blogger, I saw it on Amazon, I haven't had a jacket that was a go-to for everyday since maybe 2021? So I thought I'd grab one to try. Scott actually told me it was ugly and said to get the gray. But I have a gray Northface one I wore to death in 2018-2019 so I didn't want gray. I am not usually a fan of teddy bear sherpa but I really liked this for some reason. I wore an Under Armor fleece for a lot of 2020-2021 when I was going to work, and then got this amazing coat from Target that gets nothing but compliments but I also wore it through 9 months of pregnancy and post-partum so I'm ready to move on from that jacket.

Nope.

Don't get it.

The fit was off. I got a medium and it just wasn't a good shape. Nothing like the Amazon ad, obviously. Which is why I almost never buy anything wearable from Amazon; I don't trust those pictures. Some people mentioned the shrinkwrap packaging was off-putting, and maybe some reviewer mentioned a smell. I didn't have these issues. It was the fit and the color.

Excuse the pajamas:

I couldn't put my finger on what didn't work. I think it's the bottom. There's no "gather" and the shoulders aren't slouchy like in the picture.
Again, this is why I always say I don't buy clothes from Amazon...but I ordered something else from there I'll have to share next week because lessons aren't easily learned for me.

My point with this whole rant is that this jacket was $50. Don't do it.

I ended up going to Athleta's website and getting a jacket on clearance for essentially the same price. It's not yet arrived so we'll see.

Next up, I spend a significant amount of time wanting casual not-flip-flop-or-footbed-sandals every summer. I am the biggest fan ever of the wedge heel and wore out multiple pairs while I was teaching in Colorado. Wedges aren't super practical as a SAHM though.

I have been eyeing these from Madewell for I think two years now. I saw they were on sale last week so I grabbed them. I am not a Madewell stan because of their politics but capitalism and all. I already gave up Target for most intents and purposes and, judging by my current browser history, I'm not giving up Amazon any time soon.

These haven't arrived yet so I'll let you know if they're worth the splurge.

Finally, I ordered FOUR pairs of jeans a few weeks ago. One pair fit the way I wanted. I remember liking Kut from the Kloth back in the day but the 3 pairs I tried just felt weird. They all went back to Nordstrom Rack.

The winners were these 1822 jeans from Stitchfix. I don't know why people hate on SF so much. I have never had an issue with their clothes. These are tencel so they're comfortable and stretchy. Sizes are limited right now, but they're affordable AND comfortable.

Lastly, Carly Jean Los Angeles. They seriously have the best customer service. Cannot recommend them enough. Something else: the quality of the clothes is extremely high. This is the exact opposite of what you'd be finding on Amazon. At this point, I have a few dresses and a few shirts.

This is a hoodie and it's lightweight and super soft. I'm wearing a medium.

Man, look at that real life happening behind me.

(If you're wondering why I am barely making it onto the internet these days it's because I'm busy picking things up on the floor.)

February 16, 2023

Fashion Files.

First up. This bag.

I love a cross-body that hits at the actual waist. Since I find being hands-free is a necessity to having small children when I'm out and about, it was either a cross-body bag or another backpack. I've been using my Aimee Kestenberg backpack every single day since July (which is some kind of record for me) because it's the perfect diaper bag. It even has side pockets for bottles, which I'm sure was not the intent because it's not actually a diaper bag.

It's not for sale anymore but here:

Now that we are moving OUT OF BOTTLE LIFE in a month or so, I'm considering my options. I usually, as I did with Wells, just keep a stocked diaper bag in the car and carry whatever other kind of bag I feel like with me. My favorite bag ever (maybe?) is my black Marc Jacobs nylon crossbody, It's the perfect size, shape, and color.
But that's why I got this new bag in tan; because I already have a black cross-body.

Next, I bought shorts yesterday. ??? Right. So it's February but I saw them in-store and they are very similar to the Target ones I wore all of last summer and fall.

They're super comfy and flattering too. Currently, in case you missed it, I am on a Target moratorium for the foreseeable future, so I'm attempting to broaden my day-to-day wear past Universal Thread.

Lastly, I ordered a few things from Carly Jean Los Angeles at the end of January. ...they didn't arrive. The tracking just completely disappeared and the package fell off the planet. I've ordered from them before without issues so it was definitely just a USPS problem.

I contacted CJLA and they told me to give it a few more days...it had been like 10 and the package was promised in 5-7. When I contacted them back, they said replacement items were in the mail. They have the best customer service, for real. And when you contact them, you get, like, a real person who actually follows up.

Anyway. This is what I got. Hopefully it works out after all that, right?

WIW: The Shacket

WIW on a Thursday because that's how it goes...

These shoes from Target: I tried to return them back in February because weren't quite what I wanted. They told me to keep them and refunded me my money anyway. Turns out, they're the perfect fall transition shoe, even though they were too heavy for summer. Who knew?
These are similar.

I don't know that a trend has ever popped up this quickly. It's been fast and furious. I live in small-town USA. I see well-dressed women wearing these all over the place (okay, at preschool pick-up).

Mine is Carhartt

They're also shockingly expensive for some reason, but it probably depends where you buy

I am proud to announce that I was three years ahead of the trend: my mom bought me this shacket for Christmas in 2019. She said it looked really nice on the mannequin with black leggings (maybe at Dick's or Bass Pro, I'm not sure). I didn't wear it a ton at first because I was unsure of its purpose; the shacket hadn't really made itself known yet. But then it came in handy last year on Fridays when I was pregnant. It matched my orange and black school spirit wear very well.

Now, I wear it as a coat. It's actually just as heavy as my Northface jackets and a lot more stylish in 2022, and comfortable too.

Scott has a few jackets like this too. He bought one at Walmart in like 2017 and wore it to work outside. It was pretty ugly and it's a mess now after years of working on houses in it. So I bought him a new one a few years later so he would stop wearing the one that looks like it goes hand in hand with criminal activity. Unfortunately, he witnessed a car accident one day and stopped to help. He was wearing the new shacket and gave it away to a young boy he helped out of a car who didn't happen to have a coat that day. Again, it was brand new.

And he started wearing the one that makes him look like a threat to society again.

Maybe I'll be getting him a new shacket for Christmas.

WIW Wednesday

I'm sharing two of my favorite small businesses today, in case you were interested.

I got this sweatshirt from Alaska Chicks. While outfitting myself in Alaskan clothing isn't exactly my m.o., this brand is high-quality and comfy and cute. I love their hats and headbands.
I bought this because I got a coupon from the website and thought if I purchased a new sweatshirt maybe fall weather would arrive sooner.

I browse the Carly Jean Los Angeles website often, so I grabbed this dress a couple of weeks ago.

I couldn't believe, after checking out, that I *forgot to use the coupon code that was available*. This wasn't, like, $4 off. It was a difference of about $30. I emailed the company at like 11pm on a Friday night (the best time to shop online, when your inhibitions are low) and they emailed me back on Saturday morning saying they'd refund the discount; something they absolutely didn't have to do. Seriously, they are the best so I look forward to buying more and recommending them to everyone.

These gray lace-ups from Universal Thread are awful. Just awfully uncomfortable. I've worn them a few times and they never really got better. Very disappointing.
The camo ones are amazing. From last season though so I can't even find anything similar on the site. I got them for $9 on clearance back in December.

Speaking of Target, I wore this over the weekend (don't mind the hair..holy humidity)...

It's from a year ago, but the sleeve detail is what makes it kind of a different option. Here's something similar that's on the site right now.

If I had a reason to wear a lot of dresses right now, I'd get it for sure.

And, finally, the flats. I cannot say enough good things about the flats. They're from Target, but they are so incredibly comfortable. I have two colors and I've gone through a few pairs over the years. They are the perfect teaching shoe. I don't wear them if I'm covering a lot of distance, but they're great for anything requiring a dressier shoe than slide-on sneakers.

Basically, I'm trying to do these posts once a week or so to hold some personal accountability when it comes to clothing. Meaning, I will wear sweatpants when it's cold and gym shorts when it's warm as a rule unless I try a little bit harder to think about my clothes. I think athleisure will be the rule, not the exception, but still.

August 10, 2022

What I Wore (uh, bought) Wednesday

Because it's still too hot for clothes in Missouri. I'm not putting a whole lot of thought into what I'm wearing. I still love these shorts from Target. I would recommend getting your usual size. I ordered a size up and they're a little shapeless but it's one million degrees here most days so I don't really care. They are more comfortable than trying to wear jean shorts when I go places.

These are the fall outfits I grabbed for Sutton. You can tell I have a color palette I prefer.

I don't know if I'm just incapable of finding them again (probably) but here's a link to the general area where I found these dresses. All of their dresses are very cute. I mean, everything is cute but you get the idea.

AND I dug out the anorak I bought for Wells when he was a baby. It's very similar to the one they have in stock this year. I think it's just the cutest thing.

(Sutton has not only more clothes than I do, but she has more coats than I do. Which is really weird because she's like 130 days old.)

And a t-shirt dress straight from the bag. I got black but the other colors are still available too! I always make the mistake of getting purple or something because I tell myself I don't have anything in that color. Well, there's a reason. I've discovered that staple colors are much better for me.

And then my mom sent this Matilda Jane dress which is just perfect...too big, but maybe by Thanksgiving.

I never expected to be a Matilda Jane fan but, living in southern Missouri, I might as well embrace it.

I always go nuts buying things in August. I don't know why. I think it's a school shopping thing?
I can't even think about fall clothes when it's 90+ degrees but I saw this on Instagram and I want these jeans. Unfortunately, it's only linked to the sweater. If anyone wants to do some detective work for me, go for it. I tried :/ I even thought about messaging the influencer. They're probably not from Amazon...they're probably some of those $200 Nordstrom jeans or something.

*There are affiliate links above but, as usual, I only link items we either have or have bought. It's not a wishlist :)
