Books in 2019 (#5)

I'm noticing that I don't have a ton to say about any of these books. No major rants. No stand-out raves. Oh well.  I won't do a TL:DR (too long; didn't read) summary because my summaries are quite short anyway. I do have a STACK to tackle this month and I'm currently two books into...a lot of books. I post in IG stories and on Goodreads as I finish books, so find me in either of those places if you want the real-time updates.

Come Rain or Shine by Denise Grover Swank
I liked the beginning of this and I liked the end of this. The middle was superfluous. I hate to describe a narrative/storyline/character arc that I generally enjoy that way, but it was hashtag predictable.

Make Me Bad by R.S. Grey
I quit this after about 20%. It was nonsensically predictable in a way that I didn't appreciate.

Little Monsters by Kara Thomas
If you liked The Cheerleaders, this is one to try. I didn't like it as much. The beginning pulled me in, the middle was just drama-filled-angsty teenage girl stuff, but the end did surprise me. So if you like YAish thrillers/mysteries, find it.

I Am Watching You by Teresa Driscoll
This was a good mystery. I like British mysteries. I know I didn't predict the ending but there were parts of it that dragged a bit.

Match Making for Beginners by Maddie Dawson
This was a romance book in a way. It also bordered literary fiction, I thought. If you want a love story (or, like, 7 of them) and want there to be great writing, it's a good choice. I found that I really liked Marnie as a character in a way that I thought I wouldn't based off of the first chapter or so.

  4. I remember thinking that Matchmaking was going to have to be a lot longer to wrap up right and that is wrapped up far too rushed.

  5. I still need to read The Cheerleaders, but I liked Little Monsters. Between that and The Darkest Corners, I prefer TDC.

  6. That's one of my beefs with romances (and some thrillers too) when they get too darn predictable or formulaic, which just sucks all the pleasure out of reading them. Then again, I have also been known to get mega-ranty over books that throw in nonsensical twists, so it's no longer predictable but stupidly far-fetched or illogical. So basically, I am a very picky reader! LOL! The cover to Little Monsters is quite fantastic. I like YA but am finding that I do best when it's more fantasy than real world because of all the teenage angsty stuff. I'm just too darn old. Matchmaking for Beginners is already on my TBR, in large part because the cover is so charming.

  10. I liked that you balanced your romance/rom-com with thrillers. They're complimentary.

  13. I have Matchmaking on my Kindle and was kind of "meh" about reading it but your review definitely improved my attitude towards it. I haven't read any R.S. Grey but I found Cold Hearted Boss on Kindle Unlimited so I'll probably start there.

  14. I have yet to read an RS Grey book, but I keep hearing about them from this linkup! One of these days. I also enjoyed I Am Watching You. Maybe not my favorite mystery/suspense of all time but I've read some pretty terrible ones and this wasn't one of them! LOL! It held my interest pretty well throughout if I recall correctly.
