Today, I'm linking up with Anne and Kristen.
Picking... out a few Thanksgiving books for our nightly reading. I bought Wells a few Christmas books last year and generally buy him a new one for each holiday but I don't get the point of buying babies a bunch of books. Sure, you can start a collection until maybe early preschool-age, but they won't get much out of them for the first two years. He likes finger puppet books and lift-a-flap books, and bonus points if they rhyme.
Preparing... the house for Christmas. Looking at my pile of Christmas decorations just makes me want to cry happy tears and overwhelmed tears at the same time. This is the third house in three years that I'm supposed to find a spot for everything. Holiday decorating would be somewhat easier if everything could go in the same spot every year. Not to mention I need to set it up in a way that is toddler-proof.
I do generally get at least one something new each year, so the pile has grown a lot in 10 years. Many are family decorations I've gotten from home and/or gifts from family and friends as well.
I could write a book (a book, guys) about what it was like to decorate for Christmas year after year, wondering if we'd have a kid to decorate for someday. It still doesn't quite feel real.
Trying... to figure out what Scout is thinking. Caption this for me.
Scott was eating a cucumber and he handed the whole thing to Wells and Wells just started gnawing away because it was cold and his teeth hurt, we supposed. He didn't actually eat it. He left a trail down his shirt (and all over the floor) of chewed-up cucumber.
Feeling... overwhelmed? Just overwhelmed. This isn't new.
Following... my own instincts.
Yesterday a neighbor told me it was too cold to be out with a "baby".
All I could think to say was that He's been out in much colder than this, much younger than this.
Which is true. And this is what I meant by When the people of Pittsburgh go indoors for the winter, I'll be able to walk my dogs in peace.
Your last sentence is HILARIOUS! (I grew up near Buffalo & live in Colorado...I'm fond of the Nordic saying, 'There's no bad weather--only bad clothing! I'm surprised folks in PGH aren't hardier?! ). Good luck with your decorating project with your adorable son. Happy for you :) I've recently started leaving most of my stuff in boxes and decorate now with live greens, poinsettias, and wreaths. It took me a while to go that route, but it's nice when you can just compost it all in late January and forego UNdecorating!
ReplyDeleteBuffalo is not for the warm-weather lover! What part of Colorado? Co Sp was tropical compared to Pittsburgh :)
DeleteGood for you for following your instincts!! We take our son out in the middle of winter for (shorter) hikes. We just layer really well and dress for the weather. :) I read that book There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather and really took it to heart. Fresh air is good. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd your Christmas decorations make me want to get started now too! :)
He really likes being outside too, anyway. Last year, I just put him in the Ergo in his snowsuit. Now he's bundled in the stroller.
DeleteMight as well enjoy Christmas for two months!
Oh man, soon 49 degrees is going to seem BALMY (it is currently snowing in Michigan) - enjoy while you can, no matter what silly people say. And I love pulling out seasonal books. Doesn't work as well now that we're pretty much on chapter books, but I'm still determined to get in some of our old Christmas favorites this year :)
ReplyDeletePeople are so rude sometimes - just don't comment on someone else's parenting! Sheesh. Aw, that picture of your dog and Wells is so cute. I love that you got Wells some fun Thanksgiving books he can actually enjoy.

Thanks Lauren!
DeletePart of me totally wants to buy the literature-like picture books, but the only ones we'll use for a couple of years are the finger puppet ones anyway :)
THAT's too cold for a baby??? LOL!!! People are so funny!
ReplyDeleteI carved down our Christmas decorations last year & really enjoyed it so much more... Less hassle. this year, I need to give away all the stuff I dont use.
My possible future child already practically has a library. Lol. But that's because I love picture books and will take any excuse to buy them. I may never actually have a child and even if I do I know it will be a while before they appreciate books. the meantime I will continue introducing Jan to all my childhood favourites.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if the overwhelmed feeling ever goes away in motherhood!!! Praying things feel less overwhelming for you soon :) And yayyy for Christmas decor + Thanksgiving books!
ReplyDeleteI have only pulled out one box of Christmas stuff and decided most of it could go. I am vacillating between making a real change in the decorating scheme and just procrastinating like last year and going with the same old, same old.
ReplyDeleteDecor and toddlers in general are not always the best partners. I've never decorated all that much to begin with but everything is going to have to be placed a little higher up this year...
ReplyDeleteUgh, I hate the "it's the wrong temp" excuse. I live in NC...so we have like 2 days a year where it isn't blazing hot or "too cold" (50 or below, bahaha). Sometimes you just gotta deal with nature.
ReplyDeletePeople think they will die outside in the cold. It's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI'm not putting out most of my Christmas stuff this year. I changed the color of the room and I don't want the red with purple.
i'm glad you are decorating for christmas :) we bought a bunch of stuff last year because it was right before we found out. i almost held on to them, but didn't. it was hard to relinquish it all after getting so close, but i felt like i had to. that's hilarious he was gnawing on the cucumber.
