Thanksgiving Food Round-Up.

This year, it's yet to be determined if we're eating at home or going somewhere. I kind of like to use Thanksgiving as an excuse to experiment and create a menu. So I'll make all of this whether we eat it the day of or the day after. Military life is weird when it comes to holidays. You do what you can with what you have.

Scott is making a turkey, and I'm going to make macaroni and cheese, homemade rolls, and a grown-up green bean casserole. I'm also planning to do something with pecans and cheesecake. Fingers crossed.

If I were looking to concoct a real feast though...I would try beer bread with spinach and artichoke dip or regular spinach dip. Or maybe baked crab dip.

As for side dishes, Brussels sprouts with cranberry and feta would be good (if you like that kind of thing...I don't :).
I would prefer oven-roasted sweet potatoes, but I think I'm going to try a new macaroni and cheese recipe this year. Sweet potato casserole is also a family favorite.
And then this is our turkey recipe that Scott makes every year.

Desserts? I'd go with pecan pie or lemon chess pie or pumpkin cookies.

Also, here's last year's Thanksgiving post. It's mostly desserts.

Are you trying any new recipes this year?

  1. I'm in charge of bringing an appetizer so I think I'm doing Buffalo chicken dip...think being the word...

  2. Even though turkey is the same main dish I've always wanted to experience an American thanksgiving because the side dishes just sound incredible! Our Thanksgiving always consists of the same things; turkey, ham, mashed potato, carrots, corn, turnip, stuffing, gravy & rolls. And always pie for dessert!

  3. I AM SO HUNGRY! I'm already counting down the hours until Thanksgiving dinner, so this post definitely did not help :)

  5. My sister and I have a whole Thanksgiving menu planned for this year! She's going to make some kind of baked brie thing for an appetizer, I'm making sweet potato pie for dessert and I'm also in charge of the stuffing...we're doing a turkey, some kind of salad, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, honey roasted carrots (a new one) and she's also making a caramel apple pie for a second dessert option. I wanted yams but apparently I'm the only one that really likes them. Oh well. I'll just buy myself a can when I get home. With mini marshmallows, of course. I LOVE brussels sprouts too but we had to limit ourselves to what we can do in one day in my mom's tiny kitchen, haha.

  6. We host my in-laws the Sunday before, and I made the whole meal minus the dessert. So tomorrow, I am only making pies for my mom and dad's house (and an app), and I am so looking forward to just hanging. I hope no matter what your plans end up being, you guys have a great Thanksgiving!
