Meet Jett

*Sadly, we didn't end up with the puppy that I posted about here.  We were already so in love with him, but the breeder called last Saturday and said the pup had a few health issues and he couldn't sell him to us.  He just couldn't recommend him as a champion dog.  Of course, we don't care about the champion part and, truth be told, this made us want him more.  He probably just needs some proper loving and snuggling. Unfortunately, we couldn't be sure that taking him wouldn't saddle us with thousands of dollars of vet bills in the future, so it was a risk we couldn't take.  He'll stay with the breeder.  This is the dog they were originally going to keep.  He's now our Jett.

He's fast and feisty.  He hates the camera and refuses to pose.  I get a lot of this:

French Brittanys follow a naming pattern.  Every year is a different letter of the alphabet.  They do this so they can be sure of birth year/age in competition. 2014 = J.

At this point, I feel it is worth mentioning that Jett's grandfather was the 2003 world champion of all pointing/hunting breed dogs.  Jett has a black nose, so he can't even be shown in the U.S.  as a show dog.  If we chose to show him, we'd have to take him to Europe.  Which is actually where his "family" is from…

If you're asking if we're going to show him in Europe, the short answer would be NO.

Perhaps we should just put all of our money in the Brittany stock market and call it a day?  Or should I say, "Epagneul Breton" stock?  He and Scout aren't even the same breed.  I assumed they were distant cousins; American and French.

Names are serious business when you're in the dog business.  Scout is CROSS CREEK SCOUT.  We had a lot of freedom with his name.  It just had to have Cross Creek in it because that was the breeder's kennel name.

With Jett, it's been more complicated.  I enlisted the help of whoever reads this blog.

We got another male because we wanted another Brittany and male Brittanys are proven to be better hunters.  Plus, you don't need to worry about spaying.

Since I was on the fence (read: dead set against) getting another dog, I wanted nothing to do with it.

Scott started poking at names and came up with "Jericho".  Ew, right?  That was my reaction too.  We were thinking we'd give him a "J" name and then use "Fielder" as a call name.  However, Scott decided, in the span of a day or so, that he liked "Jericho" best.  Uh no.
You will never hear me calling a dog a canceled t.v. show from 2007 Jericho.  I said I didn't like it.  He said to find a better one.

So that led to me feeling like a Duggar googling "names J".  The best I could come up with was Jase.  However, it was still a little too "human" for me.  I know some kids named Jase.  Or Jayce.  Or Jaaaycse, if you want to get creative with spelling. Finally, I just gave up and asked the internet.

That's how we came up with Jett.  Thank you, Kristen!

Kristen suggested Jett and when I told Scott, he loved it because he had a cousin nicknamed Jett or something.  Plus, we like one-syllable names for dogs.

His official name then is Jett de Broughton.  He's all fancy and French.

I told Scott he'd better not be snoody.  We already have one snoody dog.

As we watched Scout bat him around the living room (Jett enjoyed it and got in a few hits of his own), I said to Scott, "You know, what we really did here was just buy Scout a very expensive toy.  That's how much we love him."

Scott said, "Yep.  We did."

Also, Scott has already nicknamed him Jethro.
