It's come to my attention that I haven't really focused on telling the world what I'm thankful for this year. I swear I'm grateful. I am. However, Jamie summed up my feelings nicely in this post about what it's really like to be away from home on Thanksgiving.
Which is probably why I came off as ungrateful the other day when I informed you all that our comfortable home is too small (it still is).
Anyway…
It's not really a secret that I'm one of those who avoid Facebook, and even Twitter, during the month of November. I don't really like it when people tell me they are thankful for "God, their husband, their children, their family, their pets, their health, their job, etc", and always in that order. I didn't assume, in my non-thankful-posting nature, that you WEREN'T thankful for those things. I swear I didn't think you took it all for granted. *sarcasm*
However, I'm feeling a bit like a Thanksgiving Grinch for not sharing my list with you all.
I truly do believe that I should be counting my blessings on an hourly basis. We have our health. Our bills are paid each month. We're together for the holiday season.
1. Let's start with the obvious. I'm thankful November is over. Now the posts can stop.
2. I'm thankful for Scott. He loves me and supports me in so many ways. He always encourages me to do what will make me happy. If raising a puppy together is any indication of what we will be like as parents, I think it will work out well. I'm thankful he's easy-going as a pup-parent.
And he tossed some cash at me the other day and told me to go shopping.
3. I'm thankful for my family. They are far away. But I'm so glad that they are there to go home to. It's hard living so far away. Everything becomes more complicated.
4. I'm thankful for my job. It was an ironic blessing, as I'm still not quite sure how I got this lucky. That's what I tell myself when the alarm goes off at 5:15am anyway.
5. I'm thankful for the friends I've made in Missouri. Army friends are often the best kind of friends, because you're all in this unpredictable boat together.
5. I'm thankful we're in the lower 48 because it means we can go home for Christmas without paying $3,000 in plane tickets. We're so excited to see family and friends on our own time without being hindered by an airline's schedule.
Here's something to ward off that nonsense that also gets passed around Facebook this time of year…
I really am a Grinch, I guess.

ReplyDeleteI hated living in AZ at the holidays. It was SO hard. Even though it wasn't a ton of money to get home, it still sucked.
I'm a grinch then too because I get tired of those daily thankfuls as well...just like the daily horoscopes people post & tweet. Ugh! (sorry, ha)

ReplyDeleteI didn't blog my thankful list this year either. It's not because I'm not thankful--it's because this year has been such a HELL of a freaking year that my heart is full of thankfulness every day. And the people that I'm thankful for get told almost on a daily basis right now just because that's where my life is. I'm with you on the avoiding the "I'm thankful for..." bs. I'm sorry but sometimes it just comes across more like bragging than thankfulness. Scoot over, I'll join you on the grinch bench! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, those thankful posts get REALLY annoying. I used to blog my gratefulnesses, but now it's all just redundant so it doesn't make sense. OF COURSE I'm always thankful for my husband, family, etc etc. I'd be a terrible person if I wasn't!

ReplyDeleteI'm thankful that the thankful posts are all over. I don't get being publicly thankful all month long about the smallest things. We get it.

ReplyDeleteLet's be honest, we should be thankful all year, not just during the month of November. I did the daily Facebook thankful thing last year. I don't mind reading about it, but seriously, if you're going to say the same thing every year, it's a bit unnecessary.
