Cran-Apple Oatmeal

Before you read about my new favorite oatmeal (super-exciting stuff on this Monday morning, folks), please give me your best jeans-buying advice!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm such a creature of habit.  Breakfast is usually oatmeal.

I'm not sure what your oatmeal habits are (if you have any at all), but awhile back, I decided I would make my own oatmeal from scratch because it can't be that hard.

It's easier than I ever thought.  In the time it takes me to turn on the computer and the Today show and pack my lunch for the day, I can have a bowl of homemade oatmeal on the stove.

The possibilities are endless.  I like to add peanut butter and cocoa powder.  A splash of almond milk or, if you're feeling dangerous, half-n-half.

I have a love affair with Craisins.  I love  apple oatmeal made in the slow-cooker.  So I put apples and Craisins into my on-the-stove oatmeal and I have a quick, yummy breakfast.

My newest oatmeal secret???  Go to the bulk bins at the "fancy" grocery store.  Mine is Fred Meyer/Kroger.  Buy a pound of extra-thick rolled oats, or even steel cut oats (which I haven't tried yet), for less than $2.00 a pound.  Those are the good oats!  For less than the Quaker Oats containers!  I learn something new everyday...

Cran-Apple Oatmeal
makes 1 serving

1 cup water
1/2 cup rolled (old-fashioned) oats
1/4 t. salt
1 T. brown sugar OR honey
2-3 T. milk or cream (I use almond milk.)
1/2 cup chopped apple
Handful of Craisins

In a small saucepan, heat the water, oats, and salt over low heat.  The lower you keep it, the thicker it'll get.  When all of the water is absorbed, add your sweetener, milk, and apple.  Let it cook for another few minutes.  Toss in the Craisins, stir, and enjoy!
