Do I sew? Nope.

I don't sew.  Not at all.  I mean, I can hand-sew.  A monkey could do that.
Actually, a monkey could probably operate a sewing machine too.

My husband knows how to sew.  I'm not sure where he learned how.

This is our sewing machine.

We bought it approximately 2.45 days before Scott deployed.  He needed to sew some name badges onto his bags.

We went to Wal-Mart.  He asked me what kind I wanted.  I just looked at him.  He picked this one.  I think because I told him I liked the purple and it was mid-range, price-wise.

When we were in line to pay, we saw a friend of Scott's.  He said, "Oh a sewing machine?" and looked at me.  I said, "Uhh, it's not for me.  I don't sew."  Last thing I need is people thinking I'm crafty.

I'm only crafty when it comes to ice cream.

At home, Scott set it up smack dab in the middle of the living room and did his sewing.  He tried to teach me how to use it.  If the Home Ec. teacher couldn't do it in 2 and 1/2 years of classes, I doubted Scott could do it.  He said it was easy.  Okay.  I was with him on steps one through four.  Then I got lost and blocked out steps five through one hundred and twenty-seven.  Dexter was on.

As soon as he left, I moved it to its current location in the loft.  There's a desk there.  The only reason I go into the loft is to smack the router around when the internet isn't working properly.

One day, he called and I was standing in the foyer looking up at the loft.  I said, "Oh yeah, I sewed a blanket last week with the new sewing machine!".  He said, "Really???".  I said, "No, of course not" and laughed and laughed.

Learning to sew is on my list underneath Learn to properly use camera.  I've had the camera for over a year and haven't gotten around to the instruction manual, so...

I saw this Pin and it made me think of the whole sewing thing.

Plus, it also reminded me of the night I met Scott.
He was looking for a running partner.
I said, "Sure, I'll run with you!".
Lies.  All lies.

When Scott was recently home for R&R, we were in the loft kicking around the router because the DSL wasn't working (I told you that's the only reason I go up there).  He looked at the sewing machine and said, "So you still haven't learned?"

Nope.  I haven't.  Too busy doing absolutely nothing else with my time.

Do you sew?  I'm jealous of you if you do.  It's one thing I've never managed to grasp.  I cannot thread a bobbin if my life depended on it.  My Home Ec. teacher in high school timed us and we had to thread a bobbin in a minute or less in order to pass.  That was a stressful day.

  1. I loved this post! I have a sewing machine that I got in high school but I've only used ofif a handful of times. I can do straight lines, but if a project involves curves or fancy stitches I'm definitely not your girl. I can thread a bobbin like no body's business though.

  2. A million years ago my parents bought a sewing machine for me. I sewed a lot. I made quilts, bumpers & diaper stackers for all my boys. I made them & myself clothes.

Somewhere along the line I stopped sewing. There was something wrong with my machine and I was just too busy to do anything.

I've been thinking about getting back into it. Maybe this winter.

  4. I got a sewing machine last november for my birthday and I didn't know anything about sewing. IT is was easier than I thought and I use it way more than I thought too! that quote is really funny. :)

  5. Hahaha this is hilarious! I don't sew either but I wish I knew how. There are so many fabulous things you could make. If I had a sewing machine in my loft I'd certainly use it those miss. I say you learn and just make me fabulous things.

  6. A couple years ago I had to sew a button on a shirt for work. I don't know how to sew, cook, do anything girly/wifey, basically. So I called my husband (who was stationed at Camp Lejeune) and told him about it and he walked me through sewing a button on a shirt. I was like... isn't this supposed to be the other way around? :)

  7. I love this! My sister bought me a sewing machine back in June...and it's in the box still. I had it set up and read the manual 5 times but I still can't tell you how to actually use the darn thing. A friend of mine here is going to teach a mini sewing course for a few of us (mainly because I BEGGED) so we'll see what happens! I want to learn, but I need a visual. That stupid manual isn't helpful to me!

  8. Hahah you crack me up!! I've always wanted to sew but just don't have the patience for it. My mom sews, but I've just never been interested enough to sit down and learn. Also...we have a loft as well and that's where our router resides. Like you, the only reason I'm ever in there is to adjust it. Granted, the router is actually literally the only thing in there, lol!

  10. My mom taught me a little bit about sewing when I was younger...and I can follow a pattern...but I'm really not that great at it. It's one of those things I just don't have the patience for. I made my husband buy me a sewing machine like 2 years ago, fully intending on sewing all kinds of awesome things I saw on Pinterest...yeah. I think I've sewn one pillow cover so far.

  11. I cannot believe you agreed to run with Scott on the first night you met him!! Honestly, running is something I only do with VERY good friends hahaha ;-) LOVE the sewing story. But I'm in the same boat (not with sewing obviously) with learning how to REALLY use my SLR camera. Nope. Not gonna happen.

    Happy Weekend!

  12. Don't hate me, but I do. And I also run. And I also read instruction manuals on certain things. Don't judge. But your post made me laugh, and that's why I heart you :)

  13. I have a goal list too that is pretty short. "Learn to sew" and "Figure out fancy camera" are both on it. I've started working on the sewing part. I knew nothing! The biggest battle is trying to figure out how the machine works. Youtube helps a lot.

  14. Oh my goodness, I cannot sew. Not one little bit. And, I obviously can't iron things on either, because I did that with a GS vest and some of them fell off. I love this story, it totally made me laugh. :)

  15. I took home ec in 8th grade, but last year I decided I wanted to learn how and bought a machine. And I pretty much taught myself since then. It is easy. JoAnn's has some classes if you are interested. Wait. Do they have JoAnn's in Alasks?

  16. I can't sew anything more than a button on a shirt. Even then, I'm sad to admit it's come out crooked.
