I feel like I read a lot of blogs, and I like reading blog posts on Thursdays and Fridays that say the blogger has absolutely no plans for the weekend. And they are just going to relax. Except for dinner out with friends on Friday night. A run with a friend on Saturday morning. A coffee date for Saturday brunch. Late lunch/farmers'-marketing with mom and dad on Saturday afternoon. A concert Saturday night. And church Sunday morning. Their nephew's birthday party Sunday afternoon. But that's it! They are totally going to relax the weekend away and cannot wait!
Dude. Those are PLANS.
When I say I don't have plans, I don't have PLANS. Unless you count a class at the gym, my DVR, and a Wal-Mart run for ice cream as plans.
Actually the gym class WOULD be plans. Because I'd actually have to show up on time for something. Therefore, I have to PLAN for it.
Our society has a skewed definition of "relax". I understand what it's like to be so busy you can't breathe. So busy you forget to eat (God forbid it get that bad). So busy that you forget to check your email.
And there's a reason I never want to be that busy again. I mean, life ebbs and flows, so it makes sense that busyness moves with the seasons of our lives too. I'm decidedly busier when Scott is here because he tends to make plans for us. Dinner out. The movies. You know, stuffs us anti-socials ain't gonna do on our own (you're welcome, Mom).
When I have plans, I'm very high-maintenance and less mellow. Because I'm one of those people who has to be early for everything. So plans are carefully scheduled and arranged so as not to run into each other. I tend to also take forever to get ready. I get up 3 hours before I have to leave for school because I ....am....so....slow....in.....the .....morning. Painfully slow. Rushing puts me in a bad mood.
Plans for me=going to the movies, or dinner, or (heaven forbid) meeting up with other people.
Flying to a destination wedding or going away for the weekend? The way some of you do all the time?? That's a full-blown "pack up EVERYTHING justincase" kinda emergency situation.
Are you an overachiever when it comes to being busy? A martyr for busyness? Or are you like me?
