Things-to-Talk-About-Tuesday: The football field surrounding our house

That title may be an exaggeration.

However, we have no children, no pets (not allowed, plus there's no fence), and no swimming pool.  Why else would you need a yard this big?  Answer:  you don't.  It truly serves less purpose than an outdoor swimming pool in Alaska.  (Did you know that kids in Alaska don't know what it's like to swim outside?)

Why yes.  The owner did design the house to have a deck without steps.  Brilliant.

That's the back of our house.  Note the "haymows".

From the left.

...and from the right.

These are the "woods" in the back that separate us from the gorgeous, stately houses behind us.  If it wouldn't be frowned upon to stalk-and-capture other peoples' houses on film, I'd post some pictures.  They're million dollar houses.

Oh, these are also the woods where I'm pretty sure the moose lie in wait for humans to feed on.  It's really dense, so I try not to poke around in there.  The mosquitoes are horrible too.

The "haymows" happened because last August I was lazy and refused to cut the grass.  I thought the snow coming in October would kill it off and take care of the problem.  It just prolonged it.  I was left with a tangled, weedy mess that I really needed a Brush Hog to deal with properly.  And since we don't have a bagging mower, it was just me, my rake, and my 5-gallon bucket.

And that's just the backyard.  The front yard is a decent size too.

It's gonna be a long summer.

Oh.  That's the hillbilly house next door.  Apparently, they didn't learn from last year's mistakes like I did.
(I took this picture 2 weeks ago.  It looks worse now.)

  1. I was hoping there would be a moose shout out...it's been awhile since we've heard of them! Could you set up a croquet course? You could drink mint juleps and wear floppy hats and play croquet.

  2. haha. Pretty sure we left the renters after us with some haymows of their own. Oops. ;) The renters before us left all kinds of crap for us to find in the yard once the snow melted: beer bottles, paint brushes, tools- it's a weird world up there.

  4. Well...at least the snow is gone? Although, I'd probably rather there be snow so I didn't have to mow the lawn. ;)

  6. I love that you called your neighbor a hillbilly, haha. That words always made me laugh.

Also, holy shit that's a lot of property! I know there are lot of cons to living in Alaska but that property alone has got to make it worth it.

  7. This post really makes me laugh. I'm the person who always wonders why people have huge yards and do nothing with them. I tell Rob if we ever have a nice sized yard and no kids then I'll learn to garden and we'll have several patio sets!
