Breakfast suggestions, please.

I've been told (repeatedly by doctors) that I need to eat a certain way in order to reap the benefits of feeling good and maintaining the best physical state for me. I know this. I mostly ignore it because I don't like it. It's science, though, and it's just something I don't want to do because it's unpleasant.

Because I've discovered (through the forcible prescription of a high-protein diet) that I operate better on high-protein, low-carb, it's something I need to get back in the swing of doing. You see, back in May and for part of June, I was more or less forced to eat protein and only protein. I did this through protein bars and protein shots and protein smoothies. It was more or less awful and I hated it. I haven't been able to look at a smoothie since.

Since I was medically allowed to quit that diet and go back to normal life, I've been all over the place. In addition, my skin has been all over the place (I'm working on some changes on this front too) and I feel like I can't make good choices anymore about what I'm supposed to eat and what I'm not supposed to eat. So it's been a carb-fest for the last six weeks. And we won't even talk about the literally hundreds of Sour Patch Kids I've consumed this summer.

My plan was to go back to what I've been doing for the last year and just strayed from recently:

Protein smoothies
Greek yogurt
Cheese sticks
Bars with a lot of protein
Etc.

The problem is arising in the fact that I drank a protein smoothie every day for almost an entire year, and now I can barely choke them down. I don't want to make them, I don't want to smell them, and I certainly don't want to drink them.

I need a new breakfast option, something high in protein and more or less easy. What do you eat for breakfast? Any suggestions? I don't do hardboiled eggs so that's always a roadblock when asking for this kind of advice.

Any help is appreciated!

  1. Quickly scrambling an egg with black pepper, veggies and melting shredded cheese on top is a tasty but pretty easy one. Eggs are my favorite easy protein...protein is definitely not my favorite food group. A lot of times it might be a fried/scrambled egg + toast sandwich but that doesn't exactly cut out the carbs, now does it? I love carbs way too much so I'm not the best in this area.

  2. Not sure if you eat eggs in another form, but we love these: http://bakeatmidnite.com/bacon-and-egg-muffins/ You can make them without the bacon and do veggies/cheese in it. I also love frittata or scrambled egg cups (frittata in a muffin tin). These also freeze great. This two ingredient pancake is also delicious although it doesn't really eliminate the carbs: http://www.pbfingers.com/egg-white-and-oatmeal-protein-pancake/
I normally have plain greek yogurt with nuts in it (walnuts/pumpkin seeds). :) If you aren't concerned about the fat content (I am mostly working on a low-carb high fat diet), there are also some great ideas here: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/recipes/breakfasts

  3. you can make egg omelets in a muffin tin, chia seed pudding (overnight chia seed), overnight oats and then throw in some fresh fruit before you eat, cheese egg omelet...so many ways to eat eggs! eggs are my #1 go to for protein in the AM - it's light, filling and so healthy for you. sometimes if i have them, i'll make eggs and have avocado 'butter' which is just smearing avocado onto my (grain free) bread LOL

  4. omelette with spinach and avocado. Cottage cheese with blackberries and/or raspberries, peaches, melon (all higher in protein than most think). Oatmeal with any of the above berries, bananas, chia seeds (easy way to add in protein in this, yogurt, etc). Higher protein bread (like a sprouted grain) to make toast with pb and sliced bananas. Or to make avocado toast (chia seeds on either of these could work too). "Oatmeal" made with quinoa. Or layer your yogurt and berries with quinoa layers. Another easy way to add in more is to mix in slivered almonds, cashnews, pumpkin seeds to yogurt or oatmeal. Or just eat them on the side. Hope this helps a little. 😊 I've got more ideas too if you need them.

  6. I was having 2 eggs & toast with jam on it every morning... but since its been hot for summer, I've been doing protein smoothies... so I'm no help. Breakfast is hard.
Growing up - my mom used to make me pasta :) haha... I hated breakfast food & I'll never turn down pasta.

  7. My breakfasts usually consist of 1/2 a banana and oatmeal. I need to find some better options as well.

  8. My breakfast is almost always scrambled eggs with veggies with a piece of bacon or two. Sometimes sausage. And usually some sort of fruit. That is the only thing that gets me through the day! I don't do gluten or dairy, and stick mainly to a Paleo diet. I also dabbled in having salads for breakfast for awhile, and enjoyed that.

  9. We always grab a box of Jimmy Dean English muffin sausage egg and cheese biscuits. Heat in microwave and ready to go.

I also will do bagels, pb, fruit. Sometimes bars

If I have time to sit & eat it's cereal.

  10. I regularly get sick of breakfast foods, too. Also I will spend no time on breakfast, as I'd much rather be asleep. So I'm not going to be doing anything involving hot pans, co-ordination, thinking.

I have gone through the frittata phase, then that was too much egg. I got sick of porridge, plus couldn't be bothered to wait for it to cool down. Chia seed pudding is ok, if you find a flavour that works for you. My current favourite is this, made ahead at the weekend then reheated from the fridge/freezer throughout the week:

If strawberries are too difficult/expensive to find then sometimes I'll just do the vanilla and chocolate layer. This is also good as if you need to eat a slice cold on the go that's totally doable. I usually eat with all the fruit I can find. Not sure it's overly low carb but oats have protein in, right?

  11. sooo i was going to say protein smoothie hahaha but never mind. i get sick of the same thing over and over, but i always like a smoothie. i do protein powder, banana, spinach & milk. i used to do berries but it got too tedious and i wanted to make it as simple as possible for myself. when i don't have a smoothie, i do oatmeal with banana & honey or just blueberries. at home i have weet bix (australian) with all bran because i'm 80 years old. KC eats egg muffins but they aren't my favourite. they are definitely easy and there are so many ways to customise them. he eats them cold, i heat them up and i don't like how they change the taste. he'll also take hard boiled eggs, but i hate them. i went through a phase of eating 'pancakes' - banana, egg and peanut butter in a blender, voila pancake mix. obviously doesn't taste like real pancakes but it was a fun treat.

  12. I do hard boiled eggs. My trainer wants me eating three a day. I make a bunch of them at the start of the week. I also usually have greek yogurt with some kind of fruit. But you said you were sick of greek yogurt (which I can't blame you for after reading your post). If you think of other good protein sources for breakfast, I'm all ears. I need more protein in my diet as well.
