I tried Chick-fil-a

Yesterday, I had Chick-fil-a for the first time.

You might ask how this is possible but I grew up in the northeast and, in my area at least, we didn't have Chick-fil-a.  Then I moved to Alaska and there's no Chick-fil-a there.  I became painfully aware of that because all of the southerners reminded each other woefully every time the conversation turned to restaurants.  Lots of chain restaurants are mourned when you live in Alaska.  I remember the 3 hour waits for lunch at the Olive Garden when it opened in 2012.

Then we moved to Missouri and the nearest Chick-fil-a was 90 minutes away.  By the time I'd made the trek to Springfield, I had other things on my mind.  Target! The mall! Homegoods! Sushi!

Then we got to Colorado Springs and there are a few Chick-fil-a locations but once you've done without for so long, it just wasn't on my radar.

Finally, yesterday, a new location opened on my end of town.  People had been camping out there all week because the first 100 in line get free food, once a week, for a year (or something like that).  That would still not be worth camping, for the record.

This is the side of town next to a military base and, with that population, I predict that business will be booming for the next 8 million years.  Chick-fil-a is more prominent in the south and, usually, servicemembers tend to be from the south.  It's a statistic I've seen somewhere.

So, I went to the splash pad yesterday with my friend (and her kid, obviously) and I stopped at the drive-thru on the way home.  It was fast, efficient, and, whoa, were they nice and polite at that drive-thru window.  When I mentioned this, my friend said, "Yeah, it's ALWAYS like that. I've never had a bad experience."  Even on opening day, there were a billion people and cars everywhere, but I still made it through the line, paid, and had my food within 15 minutes.  The grilled chicken sandwich was really tasty too.  I'll definitely go back.

Sometime, when I'm on the other side of town, I suppose I can go to Chick-fil-a, walk next door to the Hobby Lobby, and just make a day of it.  I really don't think it's a coincidence that they are right next to each other.

  1. Ahhh! Try the Chic Fil A sauce the next time you go. I dip my french fries, the chicken nuggets, basically ANYTHING in that stuff. Glad you finally tried it!

  3. I always forget that some of the country doesn't get to experience the goodness that is Chick Fil A. When I lived in PA we only had one inside the mall food court. None near me in MO but here in Alabama there is one is every city! Their lemonade is the BEST! You gotta try it!

  4. The chicken tenders are amazing and so are the nuggets. They soak them in pickle juice so it is a mild taste, but tangy and yummy. (I hate pickles and it isn't too much for me.) If you get the tenders or nuggets, get the CFA sauce which is so delicious!! My husband used to work at a Chick-Fil-A and I have been addicted since the first bite. :) :)

  6. I've never eaten at Chick-fil-a either. I don't know if they even have them in Washington - they definitely didn't when I lived there, and obviously they don't have them in Alaska. I think there were a couple in Oklahoma when I lived there, but none close enough to bother with. It's one of those things where I love what the company stands for and who owns it, but the food doesn't excite me enough to seek one out - plus, most fast foods have soy hidden in them somewhere so I can't eat them anyway (sorry if I'm beating that dead horse, haha).

I kind of feel the same way about Chipotle, too - everyone and their blogger mother is OB to the SESSED...I had their food for the first time last summer on a Seattle trip and I was underwhelmed.

  7. I didn't have Chick-fil-a until about a year ago. Actually, I had it when we were PCSing from Italy to Arizona. We had a layover in Georgia and there was a Chick-fil-a in the airport. I thought it was just ok. I tried it again a few months later here in AZ, and it was better than the airport location. I'd still rather have Chipotle or In-N-Out if I'm going to eat fast food (we rarely do).

  9. No, probably not a coincidence.

I grew up in NY. No CFA. I moved to Delaware for college and in our new student center on campus, they opened one. I was hooked. Still am. We go at least once a month. #noshame

    Glad you liked it!!

  13. I am in the minority because it isn't my favorite. I will eat there, but it is definitely not my first choice.

  15. I love that you hadn't ever had chickfila before. I got chickfila'd out when I was in college because it was part of our dining plan (and pretty much the only food of real substance in the dining hall). I didn't eat it for nearly 5 years post graduation. I like that you can sub their fries for a side salad. That was my favorite lunch a few summers ago--nuggets and a salad.

  16. i love how nice and polite they are. when i used to go during lunch time, the line would be out the parking lot and they are seriously the most efficient at drive thru - put all the other places to shame!
