August Books

Cooked by Michael Pollan B
This book was interesting.  I always prefer to listen to nonfiction, because I'm just bad at keeping up with reading it.  In fact, I almost always have a running list of nonfiction that I want to read, but rarely get around to it.  Cooked was what I ended up with because I couldn't find Food Rules or The Omnivore's Dilemma.  I love books about food.  Cooked was an incredibly in-depth look at how cooking came to be and the four major means of preparing food:  boiling, roasting, fermenting, and baking bread.  It's more of an anthropological look at human history and how we came to survive this long by using the 4 elements (earth, fire, air, and water) to prepare our food.
It was very textbook-like, which is good for learning (sometimes we stop learning as adults, right?) but he did kind of over explain things.  I suppose that was the point?

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell A+
I can't even tell you how much I loved this book.  It was fabulous.  Now, it started out a little slow for me, but I got so involved by a few chapters in.  In fact, Scott and I were driving somewhere and listening to it and I started making predictions out loud.  I became invested in the characters; Lincoln, Jennifer, Beth…I just wanted it to turn out well for them all!  Truly, you need to read it if you're in the mood for a great story, and I think it would make a perfect movie.  Just go read it!

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris B-
#11 in the Sookie Stackhouse series. This book has taken me monthssss to finish.  I'm embarrassed by how long I've had it on my nightstand.  I've even carried it around in my car for awhile.
It goes without saying that this was just okay.  Two more books….
I mean, they can't be any worse than the disappointing ending to True Blood, right?

Landline by Rainbow Rowell A++
"Love" is not a strong enough word to describe how I feel about Rainbow Rowell's writing style.  She tells stories in such an interesting way…not giving you all of the information at once and making you want to know more.  More is revealed, little by little, as you go. This book, if possible, was better than Attachments.  I was enthralled with it from start to finish.  Time travel books always both intrigue me and confuse me (seriously..to the point of a headache) and this is probably why I haven't dove into Dr. Who yet.
Anyway, terrific story.  Authentic characters.  Realistic storyline (minus the time travel stuff).

It was a slow month for books.  With everything we have going on, sitting down to blog is something I can barely justify…reading is, sadly, really low on the list.

Recommend a book to me!
