What I really think about Robin Thicke

Scott doesn't like the song Blurred Lines.  He said it just sends a really bad message.  I like it for its face value.  I don't read into the lyrics.  I think it says a lot for our society that it's being played on the Today show as the song of the summer.  I swear I hear it every morning as going-to-commercial music.

Here's the thing: Robin Thicke has been around for years.  He's always been doing music like this.  Really.  Google him.  And he's been with his wife for 20 years.  That's more than I can say for these Hollywood couples who are dating/engaged/married for a total of 2-3 years and then decide it's "just not for them" (Hi, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Deschanel).

I'm not defending Robin Thicke.  I'm just giving you a few facts. I don't really care.  I didn't watch the VMAs and I haven't watched MTV since I was 21 because...it's MTV.  Really, I don't care.  Dexter and Breaking Bad were on that night.

I'd just like to bring up a very important point that occurred to me during my 16 hours of driving over the weekend: a Chris Brown song came on the radio.

We, as a society, still listen to Chris Brown's music, don't we?  We still give him fame and glory and admiration?  We still buy his songs on iTunes and go to his concerts?  He BEAT his girlfriend and put her in the hospital.  There's hospital photos and police reports.  There was a court case and a public apology.  He received no real punishment and then won a Grammy 3 years later.  He also broke a window on GMA when someone asked him a question he didn't like (Can you say "was-never-disciplined-as-a-child"?).

So, if we think we need to keep vilifying Robin Thicke, maybe we can do that after we kick Chris Brown out of the music industry.  Just a thought.

  1. Amen, sister! I'm like you and don't really pay attention to lyrics (my favorite band is "Alice in Chains" and half of their songs are about hard drugs.. I just tune that out though and enjoy the vocals/harmonies) so I personally don't have a problem with Robin Thicke (plus, his songs are pretty tame compared to most hip hop/rap today).

I've been boycotting CB since the incident with Rhianna.. it's crazy how soon so many people forget!

  2. MTV is MTV, and the VMAs push the envelope. I'm sure Robin Thicke himself was nonplussed with Miley.

Chris Brown is a disgusting human being. I will not listen to anything by him, or by Rihanna, who got back together with him voluntarily.

  3. YES!!!! I don't really pay attention to lyrics. Robin Thicke seems like a pretty good guy, not many people can say they have been with their significant other that long in Hollywood.

  4. I think Robin Thicke was in the wrong place at the wrong time... & in the wrong outfit (who picked out the stripes?)...at the VMA's

That guy responding to Chris Brown's tweet? Kinda awesome!

  5. The Adam Levy tweet/image is AWESOME! That is really funny. I have no issues with Robin Thicke. I like the song but I'm on the verge of getting tired of it. What VMA's?

  6. I honestly have zero respect for Robin Thicke. Or his wife, honestly. Yeah, it's great they've been married for 20 years, but 1) his lyrics are disgusting (I'm one of "those people" who actually listen to the lyrics on occasion) and 2) his wife seems to have no problem with him rubbing all over basically naked women that aren't her, which...is just gross, to me. I read that in his latest music video for whatever that song is called she actually suggested they shoot another version where the women in it WERE completely topless. Why? Why would you WANT your husband to be completely moral-less?

I don't listen to Chris Brown, never have, never will...nor any other musician who I don't care for personally. Kanye West is another one of those.

  7. So true! Why is Chris Brown still around? I saw that he was on Today, and it made me sick. Why are parents allowing their children to listen to his music? He has proven on many occasions that he is an a**.

  8. I like the song for the same reason you do...not because of all the hype but yes its played all.the.time. Just like I didn't know until a few weeks ago that he use to be a one hit wonder with long hair. Not saying I dig him now but I'm not a long hair on guys type of gal!

  10. All I could think was "BOOM! Roasted."

I actually get quite a kick out of Robin Thicke. And why has no one bitchslapped Chris Brown yet?

  11. I completely agree. "Blurred Lines" may not have a great message, but it really is just so darn catchy!

  13. Yup. Yup yup. I'm a lot like you where I take Blurred Lines on a face value level. It's a catchy song. A LOT of songs in today's Pop world send the wrong messages. I mean, like whoa. I have actual physical reactions against Katy Perry's Alien song and her Teenage Dream song. I am actually repulsed by what they're saying to our young woman "Take me Take me wanna be your VICTIM ready for abduction." Oh no. HELL no. But you are right. We as a society pick on certain people who, in the grand scheme of things, haven't really done anything that repulsive. And I'm the jerk who didn't quite think it through when I picked a CHRIS BROWN song to interrupt my first dance with my husband at our wedding (Forever). It wasn't until after our wedding that it even dawned on me. That's how our society is: it LET me forget that about him. It was blasted for a few weeks and then Rhianna was back to making music about whips and chains. Perhaps an abuse victim should refrain from singing about violent sex. Just a thought. Okay. Apparently I found a soap box to stand on. I'll get off now. All that to say--this was a great post and I totally agree.

  15. Honestly, I think I'm the only woman who doesn't hear a "rape anthem" in "Blurred Lines." I like the song!

  16. Well said!!! I think that every time the name Chris Brown is mentioned.

  17. I truly could not agree more! Wise words!

  18. Blurred lines is super catchy. I like it. I do not like Chris Brown. I also don't like the MTV awards because I am 31. I don't really know why Miley Cyrus was performing with Robin Thicke. I thought the whole performance was bad (hello Robin, do you not know the key you were supposed to be singing in?)

  19. The Chris Brown thing = so sad, yet so true. As long as someone is making somebody money (athletes, celebrities, politicians, etc.), it's "okay" to forget the awful things they've done. Have you ever seen any of the articles about celebrities that have actually killed people? It's shocking. They still have careers, and "we" (society, that is) still revere them. The same would not be true for the average person. Something like that would RUIN one of us "average" folk. How sad! That graphic truly said it all!
