Stuff and Things: Kitchen Update

I saw these at a store. Didn't buy them, but I had to take a picture.

REALLY FUNNY STORY: The neighbor started talking to me the other day.  I mentioned that there just wasn't enough time for Scott to finish all the projects we have going on and something about how we essentially "gutted most of the house last summer and it's just slowly getting put back together".

He said, "I didn't realize anything in that house needed to be updated."

I didn't know what to say to that.  I suppose I could've said that the living room carpet and the unicorn mural were my favorite parts...

When I mentioned this to Scott, he told me to be nice and that not everyone has the same ambition as me when it comes to paint color and countertops. Different things important to different people, etc.

I was polite to this neighbor (even those he's otherwise a know-it-all busybody) because I know he's friends with the family who lived here.  However, I kind of take it as a personal insult that people think I just moved into this house and...left a unicorn on the wall.  I would like to invite all the neighbors over so they can see what we've done.

Anyway, I'm being mean. And snobby.

Moving on.

The kitchen isn't finished.  But it's been more or less "done" for the last 6 months.  I haven't posted anything because, well, I'm lazy.  I took some pictures here or there and I just dug them out of my memory card so I can share them with you.  I was inspired to do this only because last year, on the 4th of July weekend, we were painting cabinets. Things have come a long, long way.

So, first, the before pictures:

#neverforget

And an array of after pictures, taken between January and July of this year:

Again, not done. But not bad.

  1. That sink!!! I die!!!! What a gorgeous sink! And I love the shelves around the island. It is funny how what we see as badly needing updating, others see as perfectly fine. Clearly, everyone but you wants a unicorn mural. :)

  2. You should have totally bought those bins.

The maximization of storage in the kitchen is my favorite. Besides the sink. And the teal doors. And most of the things in there.

It doesn't matter what one person thinks is updated, it might not be to someone else. So the neighbor was the rude one!

  3. Haha. My friends just bought a realllllly nice home near us, but it was custom built in 1984, and had never been updated (no fancy unicorn murals, though!) and at closing she said the owners asked if they were moving in the same day. LOL...whoops. We still have many things I want to do (4th of July was spent attempting landscaping...ugh), but it has come a long way!

  5. I love your kitchen. Please design mine.

You didn't want the unicorn mural to say?! Honestly, I wouldn't even have left that creepy thing up for my kid. And she's 8.

  7. I think it looks great! Ya...not sure who thought a unicorn mural and stained carpets are ok. We're planning to paint our cabinets this winter (live in AZ & it's too hot during the summer), and I'm excited but already dreading it. Everyone says it's a lot of work, but WORTH IT! We'll see!

  8. The before kitchen isn't horrible, but it's not the best. That unicorn though. I would have painted over it and I have a 6 year old girl. That tells you how horrible it is. Different strokes for different folks.

  10. Please go back and buy the bins. You must.

I'm drooling over all your counter space!! You guys did a great job with the kitchen.

Personally I think you should have at least kept the swirly ceiling... ;)
