Change of plans

Due to…circumstances…I don't think the cleaning schedule thing will work for February.  I still am putting some scheduling techniques into practice, and I have created a schedule, but this isn't the month to focus on maintaining it.  I blame the army.  I can usually blame the army when I'm annoyed.

So, new plan.

A few weeks ago, I got it in my head (after listening to the Rick Warren podcast) that I needed to read the Bible this year.  Like this is the year. I will be 30 next year and I've never read the entire Bible.  I've read good chunks.  I've gone to Bible study groups.  I've attended church regularly.  I even carried my devotional around with me for first 3 months of 2012 because it was the beginning of a deployment and I needed that reassurance day in and day out.

It was "put on my heart", so to speak, to get myself in gear and start reading.  I started two weeks ago.

No matter how you go about it, you will finish the Bible in a year if you read 3 chapters a day.  I chose to take the historical route; reading it in the order it was written. Some days I might be able to read more and jump ahead.  It'd actually be be wonderful to finish it in less than a year, so we'll see.

While this will be an overarching, year-long task, I'm going to make a special effort to make sure I concentrate on it this month.  It's desperately needed right now, as some days I feel like I'm barely holding it together (more to come at a later date) and I need this to ground me and give me routine, faith, and hope.

March might see publication of the cleaning schedule. Or maybe I'm just so terrified of implementing a cleaning schedule that I've decided that reading the entire Bible is a less daunting task.  Suppose we'll see.

  1. This has been sitting on my heart lately, too. While I was in church on Sunday I was having some realizations about why I feel so uncomfortable about certain things. As it is with most things, church is out of my element because I'm not "good" at it yet. I'm not the best Christian. I don't know everything. And all those people sitting around me just seem to do it all better than me. And then it dawned on me--I could draw the same parallel to running. Most of the reason I DIDN'T start running was because I'd have to be a beginner. There would be people out there who would see me "just starting out." And that embarrassed me. But like with anything, you have to start somewhere. And I think you and I might be in the same boat with needing the guidance and connection right now. Thank you for putting this on my heart. <3 And good luck.

  2. Ha! Sometimes reading The Bible seems less daunting than getting a cleaning schedule that works for you.

Godspeed on both! I read The Bible in college as part of lit work and will likely never read it in its entirety again.

  3. That's an awesome goal! I've always struggled with sticking with a Bible reading plan, but I would love to actually read through the entire Bible!

  4. Nothing wrong with a change of plans!! And I think this is a great substitute for a cleaning schedule for now. I need to get a LOT better about reading my Bible...it's one of those things I always have the best intentions, but never have "time". I just need to make time.

Hope everything is okay with you guys - you've been on my heart and in my prayers a lot lately.

  5. If I may...please visit the website flylady.net Marla, the Fly Lady, has a gentle and effective method of incorporating routine cleaning. No guilt, no pressure. (It works) You may even find it possible to multi-task both of your February goals. Good luck.

  6. This is a great challenge. I've never read The Bible all the way through. I've thought about it but never quite get there. I probably should.

  8. It definitely seems like certain books tend to get read again and again (my favorites are James and Proverbs) while others are ignored for years at a time (most of the minor prophets, in my case). My mom's a Bible teacher and right now we're taking her class on Romans--it feels like it's been a while since I've done a hardcore Bible study.

  9. You are quite organized and I applaud you for getting through the whole bible in one year. I think that is a great goal. Cleaning is overrated in my opinion. Especially a deep clean, which is unnecessary for me. estherdavison@gmail.com

  10. You go lady! I've always wanted to read the Bible all the way through, but I get stuck, bored, and just not as into it as I would like to after a few chapters of the old testament. I need to dive in again.

    Good luck!!

  11. I do a yearly Bible reading plan every year. There are definitely parts that aren't easy to get through, but it's worth it! The plan I'm using right now is month by month and jumps around between Old & New Testaments and mixes in Psalms, too.
