Healthiness: Green Smoothie with Flax

We all need a super smoothie recipe in our arsenal, right?   Here's my new favorite.

Blue Diamond should sponsor me at the rate we go through this stuff.

Protein powder, flax, xanthum gum

My new love is ground flax.  I put it in oatmeal, regular and baked.  It's great in muffins and banana bread too.

It definitely adds a nice nutty texture to green smoothies.  I highly recommend it.  I've also tried this with wheat germ, so that's an easy substitution if you don't have flax.

Green Smoothie with Flax
makes 2 big servings (that's not all of it in the glass above)

1/2 cup blueberries
1 banana, frozen and cut into chunks
Optional: 1/2 cup other frozen fruit (strawberries, peaches, mango, mixed…whatever you feel like)
1 T ground flax (We use Bob's Red Mill.)
1-2 T vanilla protein powder (I like the flavor you get from it…I'd use more if it was before or after a cardio workout.)
Pinch of xanthum gum
1 cup almond milk (We use regular unsweetened.)
2 cups fresh spinach
Water, if needed, to help blend it

Blend it up!

{I'm not blind: I know it looks gross.  But it tastes so fresh and is very filling.  If it wasn't so much work to clean the dumb blender, I'd probably make 2 a day.}

  1. I've never tried flax before. I'm going to pick some up.

  3. I was drinking almost the exact same smoothie as I read this post-- almond milk, flax, spinach, frozen banana and blueberries are my go-to morning snack/second breakfast. I don't know what kind of blender you use, but I can highly recommend investing in a Nutribullet if you're a frequent partaker in smoothies, it makes cleanup so much easier.

  4. I love green smoothies. LOVE them. I actually think I'll try to have a smoothie first thing (I have a problem with forgetting to/being too lazy to eat) so that I have a little something in my belly since I can't have coffee right now anyway. I've never tried flax--but then again--being that we live in the middle of no where unless it's sold at walmart or food lion, I won't find it haha.

  6. I love green smoothies...I used to make them almost every single day. I stopped because it's too expensive nowadays. Also is it weird that I don't really like blueberries? I like them fresh, plain, by themselves...but I don't like them frozen, in smoothies, in pie, as a flavoring ingredient (i.e. blueberry flavored yogurt)...I just find them too bland.

I LOVE flax though! You can use ground flax + water as an egg substitute, too.

  8. Craig says I need to eat green leafy veggies. I really don't. (I just eat the yummy veggies cut up. No need to waste my time with bland leaves) I have been thinking about trying a green smoothie, but I have yet to jump on the band wagon.

  11. Cleaning the blender is the number one reason why I do not make smoothies. If I could hire my hubby to do all that work, I would drink a smoothie a day. Maybe that's why Jamba Juice is in business?
