As I've mentioned, we recently got Netflix streaming and we're a little obsessed. After years of waiting 3 days for a DVD to show up in the mail, we switched to the streaming plan. We have a projector set up in the basement and it's a nice little escape. In Alaska, you pay for your internet by "usage". That means, if you're using data to stream anything, your bill is sky high. I know what you're saying: "Welcome back to the real world, Kristin!" Well, I'm happy to be here.
Extract
This movie was hilarious. It has Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Mila Kunis...all my favorites. And, if you watch closely, Kristen Wiig's character totally has my purse. Scott said, "What's her name?" When I told him, he didn't believe me, because my maiden name was Kristin Twigg. (Another claim to fame, I suppose. The first one is Kate Middleton and I almost sharing a birthday).
Butter
Jennifer Garner was funny in a way you've never seen her before. I'm normally not an Olivia Wilde fan because, really now, she's just too pretty. But she was my favorite character in this movie. Absolutely hilarious. I feel like these independent-style films are a chance for actors to break out of their niche. This definitely didn't disappoint.
Struck by Lightning
Terribly depressing, but such a great cast. (written by and starring someone younger than me...sigh)
Adam Scott is a favorite of mine (as long as he's not with that Leslie Knope person). I was never a Lizzy Caplan fan (so annoying on True Blood), but I loved her in this. This movie was depressingly realistic (in a lot of ways, but not all). Absolutely nothing like Bridesmaids, and certainly not a chick flick. Liked it.
Straight A's
Another somewhat sad, somewhat depressing movie (that's how I like them I guess), but with an awesome cast. And, if Anna Paquin filmed this after having her twins, well...let's just say she might be a fairy after all.
A Royal Affair
If you don't mind subtitles and you like history, you'll enjoy this. It's a true story, taking place in 18th century Denmark. I thought it was absolutely fascinating. A queen, who's married to a mentally ill king, has an affair with her doctor (who is also the king's doctor and companion). A terribly sad ending. But, then again, that's the theme I have going here.
What movies are you watching? Got any suggestions?
thanks for sharing, i am going to look for some of those.
ReplyDeleteButter is such a great movie! I was really surprised and loved Jennifer Garner in it.
ReplyDeleteahh i'm totally into Parks and Recreation! Adam Scott isn't in it yet but I'm stoaked for that to happen.
ReplyDeleteButter is definitely next on my to watch list. It's such a funny concept that is has to be a funny movie.
All the rest look awesome, too!
Adding some of those to my list!
ReplyDeleteI am the only person in the US who doesn't have netflix. We've talked about getting it, but we still haven't done it. I am waiting until we have a tv that we can stream through. Right now our TV is made fun of by many.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check some of those out. Thank God for Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI will be watching the 1st two. I love Jason Bateman and I love comedy!
ReplyDeletePAY BY USAGE?! What is this? 1996?! That's crazy. Welcome to the wonderful world of Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI don't tend to like depressing movies/shows. I just saw the last episode of season 3 Downtown Abbey a week and a half ago and I'm upset about it till now. I agree that a lot of depressing movie are really artistically quite good...but I can't emotionally handle watching them too often!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I love everyone in Extract - how have I never heard of it??? Also, I sent you an email last week about winning my giveaway, did you happen to see it?
ReplyDeleteWe just watched Butter last night...loved it. Well, could have done without the little side-story of the daughter + Olivia Wilde, but whatever. Other than that, hilarious. I want to adopt that little girl.
ReplyDeleteExtract is next......
Extract has been sitting in my instant queue for a while now and I just keep bypassing it for other things...maybe I'll give it a shot now! I was worried it would end up being more dark than funny somehow.
ReplyDeleteI saw Extract a few years back and actually just had a Netflix date with myself a few weeks ago and watched Bachelorette and thought it was decent. But hadn't heard of Straight A's, so now its going on the list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to add a few of these.
ReplyDeleteI watched "Bachelorette" a few weeks ago, and I really liked it. I'm just wondering if Adam Scott always plays the character that's a little douchey at the beginning but comes out looking awesome?
I definitely need to add some of these to my queue. Especially the last two.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestions!
