funny stuffs. And moose.

You guys know I don't like moose.  They're weird.  And large.  And always in your damn way.
I totally fear being trampled by one.  And rarely go into the woods because of this fear (or maybe I just detest the great outdoors...you'll never know, right?)
Esther, a reader of my blog who used to live in Anchorage, has a moose story to share.

Hello Kristin kNook readers! I am so excited to be guest posting on Kristin's fabulous blog. Its definitely one of my favorite reads.

Today, I wanted to share one of my stories from Alaska. I used to live there while working on a bachelor's degree. The summers are fantastic and I would go biking on the coastal bike trail. It's right next to the inlet near downtown Anchorage. It smells of the ocean and I always wanted to eat fish n chips after my rides.

Once, on my way back, I came across some moose. There's a whole herd of moose that live in Anchorage and annoy its residents. These animals are huge and don't usually move very fast (especially when you need them to move.)

Initially, I saw a huge mom moose and a baby on one side of the trail.  Then I noticed another baby on the other side. They were all eating but I was terrified to go in between a momma moose and her baby. I hopped off my bike and watched them.

Shortly after, a jet landed at the airport and went right over us. It was so loud that I had to cover my ears and I was afraid these animals would be spooked. Well the plane didn't stop the moose from eating. It didn't even distract them!

I carefully tip toe past the beasts and hop on my bike and pedal like the wind after I was just past them. Nope, they didn't chase me. The momma was not upset but my heart was racing. Just to give you an idea, the babies were each bigger than my bike and the momma was twice as big as the babies.

That wasn't my only run-in with the moose but that was certainly the closest. An angry moose can stomp you into the ground and look hideous. Fortunately, I don't have any pictures to show you. I do have a lovely picture of a flower from Anchorage (or Colorado or Oregon... I really can't remember.)

Please come visit my blog at www.esthernorinedesigns.blogspot.com. I always share my photos and a short encouraging story.

So yeah, proof that moose are everywhere.  And they are not afraid of planes. Thank you, Esther!

funny stuffs.

#12.  The cinnamon one.  Go watch it.

Pancakes are my comfort food.  I've been known to eat them in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. That "132" batch looks like what I consumed during deployment #1.

As a child of the "I-watched-Chuckie-illegally-as-an-8-year-old" generation, I can tell you that I grew up not trusting dolls.  An elf?  No.  I would not trust this elf in my house.

Speaking of Santa, my future children will believe in Santa forever.  I did 'til I was at least 10.  My parents were good at it.

  1. I have an almost identical moose story to Ester's! I love moose though so I thought it was awsome being on the trail and have about 5 total not even phased by me walking on path. If you leave them alone and just give them their space, usually there's nothing to worry about :)

  3. Moose creep me out! They're huge and I was always afraid they'd attack for no good reason!

  4. I was into Santa until I was 10 or so too. It wasn't so much of a shock when I found out he wasn't real. Really, it just took a bit of detective work on my part to discover that Santa had the same handwriting as my mom, and that he delivered packages way early...

  6. This right here: "As a child of the "I-watched-Chuckie-illegally-as-an-8-year-old" generation, I can tell you that I grew up not trusting dolls. An elf? No. I would not trust this elf in my house."

    Yep, that's me. Exactly.

  8. Those moose will block traffic, eat bushes, and generally be in the way. I think they're fairly domesticated but I wouldn't want to get too close. I am glad that I don't live in Anchorage any more but I don't mind visiting. In the summer. Esther Norine Designs

  10. I don't know if I'd be able to be that calm if I saw a moose (or three!) in the while like that!

And I love that pic about the Elf on the Shelf. Cute idea, but can definitely be a little creepy sometimes! :)

  11. I'm still pretty sure I would prefer moose to bears, given the choice...
