I'm a high-maintenance underachiever. You're welcome, Mom.

I feel like I read a lot of blogs, and I like reading blog posts on Thursdays and Fridays that say the blogger has absolutely no plans for the weekend.  And they are just going to relax.  Except for dinner out with friends on Friday night.  A run with a friend on Saturday morning.  A coffee date for Saturday brunch.  Late lunch/farmers'-marketing with mom and dad on Saturday afternoon.  A concert Saturday night.  And church Sunday morning.  Their nephew's birthday party Sunday afternoon.  But that's it!  They are totally going to relax the weekend away and cannot wait!

Dude.  Those are PLANS.

When I say I don't have plans, I don't have PLANS.  Unless you count a class at the gym, my DVR, and a Wal-Mart run for ice cream as plans.

Actually the gym class WOULD be plans.  Because I'd actually have to show up on time for something.  Therefore, I have to PLAN for it.

Our society has a skewed definition of "relax".  I understand what it's like to be so busy you can't breathe.  So busy you forget to eat (God forbid it get that bad).  So busy that you forget to check your email.

And there's a reason I never want to be that busy again.  I mean, life ebbs and flows, so it makes sense that busyness moves with the seasons of our lives too.  I'm decidedly busier when Scott is here because he tends to make plans for us.  Dinner out.  The movies.  You know, stuffs us anti-socials ain't gonna do on our own (you're welcome, Mom).

When I have plans, I'm very high-maintenance and less mellow.  Because I'm one of those people who has to be early for everything.  So plans are carefully scheduled and arranged so as not to run into each other.  I tend to also take forever to get ready.  I get up 3 hours before I have to leave for school because I ....am....so....slow....in.....the .....morning.   Painfully slow.  Rushing puts me in a bad mood.

Plans for me=going to the movies, or dinner, or (heaven forbid) meeting up with other people.

Flying to a destination wedding or going away for the weekend?  The way some of you do all the time??  That's a full-blown "pack up EVERYTHING justincase" kinda emergency situation.

Are you an overachiever when it comes to being busy?  A martyr for busyness?  Or are you like me?

This, I need.

  1. this is an interesting topic to me because my husband and I are so different with what is relaxing. When we go hang out with friends, even if it is just sitting around talking, playing game I don't find it relaxing. I enjoy it but it isn't relaxing to me, but is to him. Relaxing to me is staying home and watching a movie.

  2. I agree with you that relaxing means something different to everyone. For me, it means sitting around and reading, playing on the 'net or watching something. For others, it might mean dancing and partying.

That said, I totally plan to relax a little this weekend. I have some reading I want to catch up on.

  3. I would say I'm like you. I love staying at home but if we have plans to go out I need to know exactly what we're doing and I'm always early. Dylan isn't early for anything so it keeps our marriage interesting! My sister always told me I don't need 2 1/2 hours to get ready but I like to take my time and do other things while getting ready! I have a PROCESS.

  4. I think my favorite thing to do is sit on the couch and do...nothing. However, that hardly ever happens anymore. My kids idea of relaxing? Going 100 mph and doing 15 things at once. Usually I look forward to the week and a vacation from my weekend.

  6. I agree. I stay busy, and not usually because I want to. I know that technically it's up to my what I choose to do so it's my own fault, but I always feel so obligated!

  7. Hahah, you're so right ;-D When I have "no plans" it means that I do NOT have to work and if I don't get to any of my tasks (gym, planting flowers, laying out, going for ice cream, shopping... which are all my weekend PLANS) then the world will not end, no biggie! Even if my weekend is filled up with "busy plans" it is seen differently in my mind because WORK is not involved-- Hallelujah!! ;-D

    Have a good one, Kristin!

  8. Haha, I am so guilty of being that blogger whom says they aren't doing anything except this, that and the other. My husband is more of the relaxed one. But I totally agree that our society has a hard time relaxing.

  9. I'm definitely more like you- I like everything to be exactly organised! However, I also like to be busy all the time... I feel too lazy when I just relax all day :P
