Shoes of a different "style"

I knew that, moving to Alaska, there would be certain adjustments.  Warmer clothes, perhaps.  Getting used to wearing jeans more (BIG compromise).  Being away from friends, family, and familiarity?  Sure, okay, I'd give it a shot.

I didn't think footwear would be such an issue.  Never in my life had I judged people by footwear.

There's shoes that are popular in Alaska called Danskos.  Do women in the lower 48 wear them?  I touched a little about Alaska fashion vs. lower 48 fashion here. (And I mean it when I say I'm the only person *I see on a regular basis* wearing boots and leggings...)

I'm about to get honest here.
-Danskos are expensive.  $120+, according to Zappos.
-Danskos appear to be uncomfortable, but I'm told they're not.  Danish wooden clogs are what I see when I look at them...
-Danskos are worn as professional work-wear shoes in Alaska.
-Danskos, in my book, are equivalent to Crocs on the scale of "How awesome are your shoes".
-I find it interesting that I can't find prices on the actual Dansko website.

In a conversation I had last year, with a female my own age, I was informed that her Danskos were the most expensive shoes she owned.  My thought?  "What in the hell is a Dansko?"  I thought she was talking about ballet shoes, because DanSKIN is an actual workout/dance apparel brand.  I didn't ask.  Just pretended I knew what she was talking about.  Eventually, I put two and two together and realized that these shoes everyone, their daughter, and their grandmother were wearing were called Danskos.

Really???

In need of a flannel-covered shoe??
Well, what do you think?  Am I insane?  Is it me?? Is it Alaska?  Opinions, please!

  1. I've been wearing Danskos for 15 years probably. I love them. They are comfortable and last forever. It's totally worth the money. If you have DSW near you, they have them for less if you want to try them out without spending $100+.

  2. My sister-in-law wears those. I never knew what they were called. Something about being comfortable it stand in all day? They are *kinda* cute (well, maybe not the flannel ones, hers are animal print) but I don't think I'd pay that much for a shoe unless it could make me look like a size 2. :)

  3. Hahahaha, oh my. Yeah those aren't so cute. I'm PRETTY sure a friend of mine has a pair of them. She travels a lot. They look similar and I remember her saying that they were A LOT of money. Hmm. I say stick to your leggings and boots-- hey, you might be the fashionista that brings that fad up to AK! ;-)

  4. My daughter-in-law wears Danskos or Sanitas(? similar shoe) all day long as a 3rd grade teacher because they're comfy and they look good. I wear Crocs and I've gotten more compliments, not just in Alaska, but elsewhere in my travels. They are the most comfortable shoes I've had, even climbed Matanuska Glacier with them! This isn't a cutting-edge fashion state, but if the shoes are comfortable and work for you, that's all that counts.

  6. I learned about them in the hospital because a ton of nurses where them and swear by them. So, I bought some, and wore them during my entire clinical year. I never felt like they were comfortable, and *thankfully* Zappos took them back after I had worn them a little under a year. (It took some conversing with customer service, but they were super great.) Anyways, I switched to sneakers. Maybe I'll give them a try again one day but I did not like them.

  7. I would agree. They definitely remind me of Crocs, and if I were going to spend over $100 on footwear, it would DEFINITELY NOT be these. Keep rocking your boots and leggings! :)

  9. I remember the first time one of my friends wore them to church, I stared at her feet and actually wondered "whose shoes is she wearing?" The only word I can think of to describe them is 'hideous', which I told her...she laughed and said during her pharmacy rotations they were amazing. Like you, I think they look like uncomfortable clogs, but if something that ugly is that popular, they must have something going for them?
