Modern Alternative Mama Review and Giveaway #2: Treat Yourself Real Food Desserts

The winner of the Real Food Basics eBook is Kiko, who said,

"I used to make a coconut impossible pie with sprouted wheat berries. I still have the recipe if you're interested. You just have to prepare a few days ahead and get the wheat sprouted. And find wheat berries to sprout too."

Thanks for everyone's participation!  Keep reading to find out how you can win a DESSERT cookbook this week.
Those are usually better than regular cookbooks anyway....

It's time for Modern Alternative Mama Giveaway #2!

But first I should probably tell you about this book...

Treat Yourself:  Real Food Desserts is about desserts that are tasty and classic, yet not made with the traditional white sugar and white flour.

There's a recipe in this book to fit each and any occasion:
  • My mom's birthday (were I ever to be home for it)?  Lemon cake.  She loves lemon cake and this one is baked in a bundt pan.  So much extra flavor comes from the added lemon zest.  I do love lemon zest.
  • Whipped cream for the top of pudding, ice cream, hot chocolate?  It's there too!  The only difference is that it's sweetened with a bit of real maple syrup instead of white sugar.
  • One Easter, Scott and I bought a small carrot cake from the grocery store bakery for just the two of us.  It tasted delicious...then we read the back of the package it came in.  Then we threw it away.  The list of ingredients, calories per slice, and fat grams were too much to stomach.  I will certainly be making Kate's Carrot Cake as a holiday dessert this spring.  It's a simple list of ingredients topped with a classic cream cheese frosting.  There's nothing better than topping cake with cream cheese frosting!
  • I'm big on cupcakes that don't use a ton of butter.  But Kate's Vanilla Cupcakes?  They don't have butter in them at all, and they still taste great!  I think it's the honey that does it.  While I will often make boxed cake mixes (and, we're all friends here, so there's no shame in that), this will quickly turn into a go-to vanilla cake recipe for me.  Kate recommends using it as strawberry shortcake.  I concur.
  • And then there's the recipe I'll share with you today...Brownies just taste richer when you make them yourself.  There's some satisfaction in knowing you created a baked good all by yourself.  (That's why I do it, folks.  It makes me feel accomplished.)

    Chocolate Brownies
    makes an 8x8 pan

1/2 cup butter (1 stick) (You can sub half with applesauce for slightly cake-ier brownies.)
3/4 cup sucanat (You can sub brown sugar.)
    1 egg
    1 t. vanilla
    1/2 cup cocoa powder
    1/2 t. sea salt (or 1/4 t. table salt)
    1/2 t. baking powder
3/4 cup almond flour (You can sub with whole wheat pastry flour.)

Optional:  I topped with some mini-chocolate chips.

In a saucepan, melt the butter (or butter/applesauce).  Stir in the sucanat (or brown sugar).  Add the cocoa powder, egg, and vanilla, mixing well to combine.  Add in the flour and stir until it is thickened.  Pour into a greased 8x8 pan (top with chocolate chips if desired) and bake at 350* for approximately 20 minutes.  (Mine was done around the 18 minute mark.)

    Alright...on to the giveaway!

The Modern Alternative Mama is going to give one of my readers a copy of the eBook Treat Yourself:  Real Food Desserts.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me what your favorite dessert is.  Like the ultimate dessert that you love and have to have ....at least once in a while!  I enjoy making over desserts (see my obsession with subbing applesauce for oil), so I'd love to try this on a reader favorite.

The giveaway ends on Friday, December 16th, so you have until then to enter.  Once again, I'd love.love.love it if you'd become a follower of Kristin's kNook and I know Kate would appreciate if you'd check out her tips and tricks on Modern Alternative Mama.

While on her site, if you'd just like to go ahead and order your own copy of Treat Yourself:  Real Food Desserts, here's a coupon code:  DESSERT25

    Good luck!

    3. I'm not sure that I can pick just one because...well....."Hi, my name is Becky, and I'm a dessert-a-holic."

I really do love pecan pie......but sometimes, there is just nothing as wonderful as homemade chocolate chip cookies, and it doesn't matter if they're made from a mix, frozen dough, scratch or whatever. Chocolate chip cookies are amazing!
